Show prep was interesting yesterday evening. It seemed every story of interest that I ran across was about violence. We already had a couple of stories about it on tap for today. I had no idea it was going to dominate today’s discussion.
But we need to face the reality. Violence is all around us. It’s advocated for, prescribed, practiced and praised. What’s wrong with us?
Part of it is education. We have no fewer than three stories about the education world and those who are part of it embracing violence as a legitimate tactic in public debate.
Part of it is immaturity. Nobody’s being taught how to handle disappointment, anger or fear. Striking out becomes the response.
Eventually it comes home. What do we do then? Are we ready for it? Can we properly respond or are we victims in waiting?
And when speech is violence (ask the aforementioned educators), we are all about it on BML.
