Orlando City Council To Discuss Violence Downtown

(Orlando, FL) --Orlando's police chief may offer some ideas today on how to make the downtown safer. Police Chief Eric Smith will meet with the city council during a workshop. Councilman Jim Gray requested Smith attend the workshop to discuss violence downtown. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has proposed stopping alcohol sales at midnight, but at least one councilwoman doesn't like that idea. Shan Rose tells WESH 2 to have a thriving downtown, the city shouldn't be telling people they have to go somewhere else once midnight strikes.

Drone Operator Saves Girl's Life At Pensacola Beach

(Pensacola Beach, FL)-- A drone operator is credited with saving a girl's life in Escambia County. Andrew Smith was at Pensacola Beach on Thursday when he learned a teenage girl was caught in a rip current.He attached a flotation device to his drone, flew it out to the girl, and as he lowered it, she grabbed it, hung on and eventually made it to shore. Paramedics checked her out and said she was OK. Smith says the girl's father thanked him and called him his guardian angel. Smith tells WEAR TV it was pretty crazy.

National Safe Boating Week ;3 People Rescued Off Sinking Boat

(Fort De Soto Park, FL)-- Three people are on dry land Friday after being rescued off of their sinking boat in Fort De Soto Park. Coast Guard officials said yesterday that they responded to a call about a boat "rapidly taking on water". It's National Safe Boating Week and officials are encouraging people to get their boat safety checked. 

Memorial Day Travel Predicted To Break Record

(Heathrow, FL)-- The number of travelers this Memorial Day Weekend is expected to be record breaking. Triple A is forecasting 45 million Americans will hit the road between May 22nd and 26th for the holiday weekend. That would break the previous record set in 2005. More than 39 million people are expected to travel by car. Meanwhile, over three-and-a-half-million travelers are expected to get to their destination by plane, an almost two-percent increase from last year.

Border Patrol Agents Stop Animal Smugglers In San Diego

(San Diego, CA)-- Border Patrol agents in San Diego have stopped two wildlife smugglers. Agents arrested a 51-year-old man from Mexico with six live parrots hidden in his boots and six other parrots hidden under the seat of his car, with two of the birds unfortunately dying during the smuggling attempt. In a second case, a 26-year-old man from Mexico was arrested for trying to bring 16 parakeets across the border.
