Newly Filed Bill Would End In-State Tuition For Undocumented Students

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A new bill is trying to end in-state tuition for undocumented college students in Florida. The measure recently filed by Republican Senator Randy Fine would reverse a 2014 state law, potentially impacting thousands of people. Currently, young immigrants who grew up in Florida are able to qualify for DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which temporarily protects them from deportation and allows them to benefit from in-state tuition. Fine says he believes it's maybe time to stop giving illegal immigrants a reason to come to America. Meanwhile, Democrat State Representative Anna Eskamani says it's important to stress that in-state tuition is being accessed by people who grew up in Florida and also pay taxes. Lawmakers are scheduled to return to Tallahassee for the next legislative session in March.

Disney Joins Other Hotels In Filing Lawsuit Against Orange County Taxes

(Orlando, FL) -- Walt Disney World is suing over how much it had to pay in Central Florida taxes. The company filed more than a dozen lawsuits against Orange County Property Appraiser Amy Mercado late last week, accusing her of inflating the value of its properties for the 2024 tax year. The alleged impacts were directed at Disney's Orlando area theme parks and hotels, which caused the company to pay nearly 100-million dollars in taxes. Similar cases have been submitted by other big name attractions, including Universal Orlando Resort. Mercado, as well as the county's tax collector and the Florida Department of Revenue, have been named in the lawsuits.

Deputy Stabbed In Road Rage Incident In Osceola County

(St. Cloud, FL) --An Orange County deputy is hurt after an apparent road rage incident in Osceola County. It happened yesterday afternoon in St. Cloud. St. Cloud Police say Daniel Siekawitch stabbed the off-duty deputy in the shoulder. The deputy then pulled his gun and detained the 32-year-old suspect until police arrived. He's charged with aggravated battery. The deputy has not been identified. His injuries are not life-threatening.

AG Moody Asks Florida Supreme Court To Hear Case Of Former Jackson County Deputy

(Tallahassee, FL) --The case of a former Jackson County deputy could head to the state's highest court. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a notice last week asking the state supreme court to hear the case of Zachary Wester. The former Jackson County deputy was convicted of racketeering after he allegedly planted drugs in cars that were pulled over in traffic stops. An appeals court last month overturned that conviction, though. It ruled racketeering didn't apply in Wester's case because he was the only suspect, and racketeering needs at least two suspects under state law. Moody wants the Florida Supreme Court to reverse that decision and reinstate the racketeering conviction.

Miami-Dade County Clinic Raided

(Miami, FL) --A Miami-Dade County clinic could be tied to a fraud scheme. Miami-Dade Police raided the Wise Care clinic in Hialeah yesterday. Three employees at the clinic on Northwest 173rd Street were detained but no arrests were announced. Police say the clinic was part of a car insurance fraud scheme. People would allegedly stage fake accidents, and the so-called victims would be sent to the clinic to collect fraudulent medical expenses. Neighbors tell CBS News Miami the clinic has only been open a few months.

Googly Eye Art

(Bend, OR) --Officials in Bend, Oregon, are asking whoever is responsible for putting googly eyes on artwork around the city to stop it. The googly eyes were placed on a statue of deer, a sphere, and other art over the last several months. The city says it takes time and costs money to remove the googly eyes without damaging the artwork. They say wreaths, leis and Santa hats are fine, but stay away from adhesives and graffiti that damages the artwork.
