Infamous South Florida Sports Booster Pardoned by President Joe Biden

(Miami, FL) --Former University of Miami Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro is a free man, one of 15-hundred people pardoned by President Joe Biden. Shapiro was sentenced to 20 years in prison back in 2011 after pleading guilty to securities fraud and money laundering -- all part of a nearly one-billion dollar Ponzi scheme. He was also part of a scandal involving illegal gifts and benefits to Canes players and was sanctioned by the NCAA, but never criminally charged as a result.

State May Buy Land In Central Florida

(Tallahassee, FL) --An upcoming meeting could lead to land in Central Florida being protected from development. Governor Ron DeSantis and the Cabinet will meet Tuesday to discuss several conservation measures. Those measures include paying almost 24 million dollars for a conservation easement on four thousand acres in Osceola County. DeSantis and Cabinet members will also consider buying over 13-hundred acres in Volusia County near New Smyrna Beach for over 18 million dollars. News Service of Florida reports statewide, DeSantis and the Cabinet will consider buying almost 87-thousand acres in fifteen counties to prevent the land from being developed.       

St. Pete Nurse Arrested For Forging Check

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A nurse in Pinellas County is accused of stealing money from a patient. Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital nurse Trenton Duckworth is due in court today after he was arrested Saturday. The 23-year-old allegedly stole five thousand dollars from a patient by forging the victim's signature on a check Duckworth made out to himself. According to the arrest report, Duckworth also used the patient's credit card to buy personal items and place bets on sporting events. He's facing charges that include exploitation of a person 65 years or older. The hospital says it has launched an internal investigation and is fully cooperating with law enforcement.   

FBI Racks Up More Than 3,000 Tips About Drone Sightings

(Washington, DC) --Mystery drones menacing the East Coast are all the rage these days with the FBI reporting receiving more than three-thousand tips since the first sightings earlier this month. That includes everything from secret military testing to an Iranian mothership to alien tech. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas [[ my-OAR-kuss ]] says Americans shouldn't be concerned. Mayorkas told ABC's "This Week" thousands of drones are flown every day for a variety of personal and commercial uses. He noted rules have recently been changed allowing them to fly at night, which could be why more people are noticing them. He said his agency is unaware of any foreign involvement, but it will keep Americans informed about any potential risks going forward.

Coffee May Help Prolong Lifespan By Almost 2 Years

(Undated) --Your morning cup of coffee might be more than just a quick pick me up.  A new study done by the University of Coimbra in Portugal says that the drink may be adding to your lifespan.  The research was funded by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee, a nonprofit organization started by companies from the coffee industry. The study found that regular coffee drinkers may be adding an average of almost two healthful years to a their lifespan.
