Suitcase Killer Sentenced To Life
(Orlando, FL) -- An Orange County woman who killed her boyfriend will spend the rest of her life in prison. A judge yesterday sentenced Winter Park's Sarah Boone to life for second-degree murder in the death of Jorge Torres, Jr. The 42-year-old died in 2020 after she zippered him up in a suitcase and refused to let him out as he suffocated to death. Boone claimed she suffered from Battered Spouse Syndrome, and she killed Torres in self-defense. Before the trial, the 47-year-old Boone was offered a 15-year sentence in a plea deal, but she rejected it. Boone's lawyer says he'll meet with her today to discuss a possible appeal.
Deadly Road Rage Shooting In Orlando
(Orlando, FL) -- A man is dead after an apparent road rage shooting in Orlando. It happened yesterday morning on East Colonial Drive. He has not been identified. Orlando Police have not announced an arrest. A witness tells Fox 35 News the man confronted a woman for following too closely, and she shot him in the head. The OPD says he died at the scene.
39 People Arrested As Part Of Tampa Bay DUI Operation
(Tampa, FL) -- More than three dozen people are facing DUI charges in connection with a Tampa Bay initiative aimed at keeping impaired drivers off the road. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says nearly 40 drivers were arrested as part of Operation Turkey Day. The agency partners with Tampa police and the Florida Highway Patrol to conduct more than three-hundred traffic stops over the Thanksgiving weekend. Sheriff Chad Chronister, who was recently nominated by President-elect Trump to head the DEA, says no one should have to worry about their safety on the roads during the holidays.
Fort Lauderdale Commission To Discuss Settling Lawsuit With Woman Shot By Rubber Bullet During Protest
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A vote today could bring an end to a legal battle between a woman and the city of Fort Lauderdale. LaToya Ratlieff sued the city after she was shot by a rubber bullet fired by a police officer four years ago. Ratlief was in a crowd protesting George Floyd's death, and officers fired rubber bullets and used tear gas to break up the protest. One of the rubber bullets broke Ratlieff's eye socket. She sued the city last year to cover her medical bills, lost wages and emotional distress. The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the city commission could vote tonight to settle the case for almost two million dollars.
Two Flight Attendants Kicked Off Plane For Failing Breathalyzer Test
(New York, NY)-- Officials removed two flight attendants from a plane in Amsterdam after they failed a pre-flight breathalyzer test. The attendants were preparing to depart on a Delta Air Lines flight for New York City when they were summoned for a test by Dutch authorities. Under Dutch law, flight attendants are not allowed to drink for up to ten hours before the flight. According to the NL Times, one of the Delta flight attendants was over seven times the legal limit.
Doctor Offers Decoration Safety
(Undated) -- A doctor is offering safety tips for holiday decorations. Carole Parsons, an emergency medicine physician for the Cleveland Clinic, says falls from ladders is one of the most common injuries. He says make sure the ladder is firmly planted in the ground, have someone else with you and not reach out too far when trying to hang lights. Any lights with broken bulbs or frayed wiring should be tossed because they are a fire hazard. He recommends keeping live trees away from fire places or other fire sources. Consumer Safety Product Commission stats show last year nearly 15-thousand people were treated in emergency departments due to holiday decorating-related injuries.
