Atlantic Hurricane Season Ends
(Miami, FL) -- The Atlantic hurricane season is officially over. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says this year had an "above-average" hurricane season. Overall, there were 18 named storms in 2024, including eleven hurricanes and five major hurricanes. History was made in July when Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 storm in the Atlantic on record. Hurricanes Helene and Milton made landfall in Florida as major Category 4 and Category 3 hurricanes, causing billions of dollars in damage.
Trump Taps Chad Chronister For DEA Administrator
(Palm Beach, FL)-- President-elect Trump is nominating Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister to serve as the administrator for the Drug Enforcement Agency. On Saturday, Trump made a social media post where he praised Chronister's service. He says as DEA administrator, Chronister will work to stop fentanyl and other illegal drugs from crossing the southern border.
Trudeau Says Tariff Meeting An "Excellent Conversation"
(Palm Beach, FL)-- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he had an "excellent conversation" with President-elect Trump in Florida Saturday regarding tariffs. He didn't offer any details about the meeting at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. It came just days after Trump threatened to impose a 25-percent tariff on all Canadian goods. Pictures posted on social media showed Trump and Trudeau smiling as they sat side-by-side at a dinner table.
Cold Weather Shelter Opens In Brevard County
(Titusville, FL)-- A nonprofit in Brevard County is giving the homeless a chance to stay out of the cold. LifePointe Ministries opened a cold weather shelter yesterday at the Titusville Civic Center. Overnight temperatures were expected to drop into the 40s. The shelter offers dinner and breakfast, showers and clothes. The shelter will be open again tonight at 9:00.
UCF Football Coach Malzahn Resigns
(Orlando, FL) -- UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn is stepping down after four seasons with the Knights. After posting nine wins in each of his first two years at UCF, the Knights were a combined ten-and-15 the last two years. That includes a five-and-13 record in UCF's first two years of Big 12 play. ESPN is reporting that Malzahn will join Mike Norvell's staff at Florida State, where he'll be offensive coordinator and take over play-calling duties. FSU has not confirmed Malzahn's hiring, but did say in a statement the Seminoles "have identified our next offensive coordinator."
Australia Passes Social Media Ban For Teens
(Canberra) -- Australia is passing a landmark ban on social media for children under 16. On Thursday, the country's senate overwhelmingly voted to pass the ban, which will take at least a year to go into effect. The ban could see companies banned up to 50-million Australian dollars if they fail to prevent children from having accounts. It's the latest effort from politicians worldwide to regulate children's social media use as concerns about its negative impact on mental health continue to grow.
