Florida Urging Congress To Pass Kids Online Safety Act

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida is joining a national effort to increase federal online protections for children. Attorney General Ashley Moody and a coalition of 31 other state leaders are urging Congress to pass the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act before the end of the year. The group says lawmakers need to address the growing crisis of youth mental health linked to social media use. A letter was recently sent to Congress to highlight several ways to enhance online safety, including providing parents with tools to identify harmful behavior and requiring platforms to enable their own protections. The latest move comes as many states, including Florida, have already launched investigations into popular social media companies.

Couple Arrested For Attacking SRO In Volusia County

(DeLand, FL) -- A couple is accused of attacking a school resource officer in Volusia County. The sheriff's office announced yesterday Jorge Rivera and his wife, Dagmarie Aponte Iturrino, were arrested for attacking the SRO at Deltona Middle School. The three were having a conversation about the couple's son after he was accused of shoving a girl at school on Monday. Deputies say Iturrino, who's a voluntary pre-K teacher at Spirit Elementary School, pushed the SRO against the wall while Rivera punched the SRO in the head and knocked her to the ground. Rivera's also accused of grabbing the SRO's taser, but deputies say he dropped it when the SRO pulled her gun. The SRO was taken to the hospital for a possible concussion. The couple is facing charges that include battery on a law enforcement officer, and Rivera is accused of directing a slur at the SRO.  Sheriff Mike Chitwood says the couple's child was there when all this happened. He says 'if you're wondering why some kids show no fear of consequences in today's society, look no further than these parents as Exhibit A.'

Orange County Commission Discusses Recovering Money Spent By Elections Supervisor

(Orlando, FL) -- Orange County officials are divided over how to recover millions of dollars from the elections office. The county commission met yesterday to discuss how to retrieve four million dollars Elections Supervisor Glen Gilzean spent. He awarded the money to Valencia College for scholarships and CareerSource for job training. Commissioners say Gilzean should have returned the excess funds to the county, and they want it back, but they couldn't agree on how to go about doing that. County Attorney Jeff Newton told the commission what Gilzean did is completely inappropriate and not in accordance with Florida statutes or case law. While Newton says his staff is chomping at the bit to go forward, Commissioner Mike Scott says he'd like a solution that doesn't involve legal fees.

Illinois Man Accused Of Kidnapping Plot Of Florida Boy

(Chicago, IL) -- An Illinois man is accused of plotting to kidnap a child from South Florida. Thirty-five-year-old Devontay Shields was arrested at Chicago Union Station on Saturday as he was trying to board an Amtrak train to Miami. Federal prosecutors say Shields wanted to kidnap a boy from a Fort Lauderdale private school before holding him for a 100-thousand-dollar ransom. The suspect was taken into custody while he was carrying children's toys. He denied any wrongdoing. However, authorities were able to record one of Shields' meet-ups where he discussed his alleged plan. His first court appearance is scheduled for next week.

Flight Crew Member Stopped With Loaded Gun At Reagan National

(Washington, DC)-- An airline flight crew member is facing penalties after allegedly trying to take a loaded gun onto a plane at Ronald Reagan National Airport. The Transportation Safety Administration says the nine-millimeter handgun was found in the crew member's carry-on during a screening on Friday. The gun was confiscated by airport police and a citation was issued. The unidentified crew member could also face a fine of up to 15-thousand dollars for trying to bring the gun onto the plane.

Today in History

2006, reacting to public criticism, News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch canceled a scheduled O.J. Simpson book and TV interview. Both were promoted as Simpson's hypothetical account of how he would have murdered his ex-wife and her friend had he been the one responsible for the crime a decade earlier. Murdoch called the project "ill considered."

1998, Russia launched the first module of the $60 billion International Space Station.

1789, New Jersey became the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights.
