Injuries Reported In Brevard County Machete Attack
(Palm Bay, FL)-- Some people are hurt after a machete attack in Brevard County. It happened last night in Palm Bay in the woods off South Babcock Street. Palm Bay Police say at least two people are hurt. No one was killed, though. No arrest has been announced, and there's no word on a motive.
Orlando Ends Downtown Curfew
(Orlando, FL) -- You can visit downtown Orlando tonight without having to worry about a curfew. The city announced yesterday it was canceling the state of emergency curfew in the Downtown Entertainment Area.The curfew was put in place after a deadly shooting Halloween night. The city also announced new measures meant to end what it calls the street-party atmosphere during late-night hours. Starting next Friday, the 15th, pedestrians will be restricted to sidewalks outside nightlife venues through downtown, including Orange Ave. The city says it hopes reopening Orange Ave to vehicular traffic will create a safe experience while continuing to support our small businesses and nighttime economy.
Winter Garden Considers Alcohol Sales Restrictions
(Winter Garden, FL)-- A city in Orange County is considering restricting alcohol sales. Winter Garden officials will meet next week to discuss banning alcohol sales between midnight and 2:00 a.m. The city says the proposal is in response to complaints about trash and illegal activity downtown. It could go into effect as soon as next Thursday. It would affect seven businesses, including Pilar's Martini and Loft. The owner tells Spectrum News 13 she was shocked to hear about the proposal, and she predicts even though no one wants it, we're going to get it anyway.
BMX Racing Complex Proposed For Brevard County
(Palm Bay, FL)-- Change could be coming to a problem area in Brevard County. A rep from USA BMX went before the Palm Bay City Council yesterday. He proposed building a bike racing venue at an area known as The Compound. Several crimes have been reported at The Compound, including some murders. USA BMX estimates the facility could bring in two-and-a-half million dollars a year.The city council didn't take any action on the proposal, but some residents showed their support. One man tells News 6 a BMX park would give kids something to do.
Teen Arrested For Having Loaded Gun At School
(Tampa, FL) -- A teenager is facing charges after being found with a loaded gun at school. Tampa Police announced yesterday that 17-year-old Darrice Marvin Saddler was arrested at Gary Adult School on North 40th Street. The gun was found during a bag check. The TPD says the gun was stolen during a car break-in in Hillsborough County. Saddler is charged with possession of a firearm on school property and felon in possession of a firearm.
Unlicensed Contractors Arrested In Pinellas County
(Clearwater, FL)-- Pinellas County is trying to crack down on unlicensed contractors. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy announced the results yesterday of a two-day joint operation on Clearwater Beach called Flood of Fraud 2. Over 40 people were arrested. They're facing over 50 charges that include operating as unlicensed contractors. Gualtieri says the suspects are scammers and thieves. Gandy says the goal was to make sure residents dealing with catastrophic storm damage don't take another hit from an unlicensed contractor.
21 Women Arrested In Crackdown On Asian Massage Parlors
(Tampa, FL) -- Twenty-one women, all from China and all in this country legally, have been arrested on prostitution-related offenses in Polk County, Florida. Sheriff Grady Judd says his vice unit staged a two-day undercover operation at a dozen Asian massage parlors. He says 20 of those arrested offered to commit sexual acts for money. Judd says he plans to work with the federal government to have these women sent back to China.
Wooden Satellite Launched Into Space
(undated) -- The world's first wooden satellite has been launched into space. The palm-sized satellite, which was built by Japanese researchers, will be flown to the International Space Station and later released into orbit about 250 miles above Earth. It'll stay in orbit for several months to see how wood endures the extreme environment of space. The invention is an early test of using timber in Mars and lunar exploration and if it's successful, it could open the door to other uses for wood in space.
