Milton Makes Landfall In Sarasota County
(Sarasota, FL) -- Hurricane Milton won't be forgotten anytime soon in Sarasota County. That's where the storm made landfall last night, around 8:30, as a Category Three, in Siesta Key. Winds were reported at 120 miles an hour. Damage spread well beyond Siesta Key. At one point last night, there were over a million power outages in Tampa Bay.
Deaths Reported In St. Lucie County
(Fort Pierce, FL)-- Hurricane Milton is blamed for an unknown number of deaths in St. Lucie County. Sheriff Keith Pearson said people had been killed by tornadoes in Fort Pierce in Spanish Lakes Country Club Village. He didn't have an exact number of those killed. Pearson says search and rescue teams were planning to go through the rubble and try to recover anyone they can.
Thousands Deployed To Help In Relief Efforts
(Tallahassee, FL)-- Thousands of people stand ready to help following Hurricane Milton. Governor Ron DeSantis announced yesterday state, local and national units are on standby ready to be deployed where needed. That includes about 200 soldiers from the Florida State Guard, over five thousand service members from the Florida National Guard and about 16-hundred people from the Florida State Fire Marshal's Office. The FDLE is also directing about 500 law enforcement officers from outside Florida.
Flood Watch In Effect
(Melbourne, FL)-- Flooding remains a concern today in Central Florida. The National Weather Service has a Flood Watch in effect until 8:00 p.m. Excessive rainfall could lead to flash flooding. The NWS also warns excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding could also be a problem in poor drainage and urban areas. Water rescues may be needed in the hardest hit areas. We could also get hit with tropical storm force winds until this afternoon. At one point last night, over 150-thousand customers in Central Florida were without power.
Tornado Damage Reported In Palm Beach County
(Wellington, FL)-- Palm Beach County is dealing with damage from Hurricane Milton. The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down in Wellington yesterday afternoon. Several homes near Wellington National Golf Course were damaged. One woman whose home was damaged tells CBS News Miami it was terrifying, and she thought the house was going to collapse.Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Tornadoes Reported In Miami-Dade And Broward Counties
(Miami, FL) -- A tornado may be responsible for some damage in Miami-Dade County. A man says it sounded like a train was coming toward his house yesterday afternoon in Southwest Miami-Dade. After it passed, he went outside and found a tree was uprooted. There was some other damage nearby. He and some neighbors tell 7News they believe it was a tornado, but the National Weather Service has not confirmed that. The NWS did confirm two tornadoes made landfall yesterday afternoon in Broward County, though. No one was hurt, and no damage was reported.
Curfew In Place In Osceola County
(Kissimmee, FL)-- Be careful if you plan on going around town to assess the damage this morning. Some counties still have curfews in place. Osceola County has a curfew in place until 10:00 this morning. It includes the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud. The county asks for all residents to remain off the streets until that time.
