DeSantis Launches Operation Blue Ridge To With Helene Impacts
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis launched Operation Blue Ridge over the weekend as a way to deploy extra resources to North Carolina and Tennessee. The multi-agency response will include State and National Guard members, Florida emergency management officials, and a variety of other first responders. The initiative will also help Floridians who want to be rescued from Western North Carolina, where communities were hit with catastrophic flooding. Here in the Sunshine State, the governor gave an update yesterday, saying more than 80-thousand people were still without power. At least eleven people died in Florida as Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area last week.
Hundreds Of PortMiami Workers On Strike
(Miami, FL) -- Hundreds of workers at one of the country's busiest ports are on strike. Contract negotiations failed between PortMiami leaders and the International Longshoremen's Association. The union is fighting for higher pay and stronger protection against an automated workforce. The National Retail Foundation says a one-day shutdown at ports can lead to up to five days in recovery efforts. Union President Eugene Dixon says the potential walkout could have a great impact on the economy. Members of the International Longshoreman's Association went on strike as of midnight after they couldn't agree on a new contract. This will affect workers at Port Miami and Port Everglades.
Seminole County Resident Starts Process To Remove Blockage Blamed On Flooding
(Longwood, FL) --A dispute over flooding in a Seminole County community could be coming to an end. A county spokesperson said yesterday a Longwood resident has applied for a permit to remove a blockage blamed for flooding her neighbors' properties in Shadow Bay. Work to remove the blockage will start once an engineer signs off on the project. That could happen as soon as today. A magistrate ordered the woman to resolve the issue after she filled a drainpipe on her property with concrete because of a dispute with the Shadow Bay HOA. Today was the deadline to comply with the magistrate's ruling. Failure to do so would have led to fines of 250 dollars a day. An HOA board member tells News 6 it has been a long six months for everyone in the community.
