Teachers And Professors Leaving Florida For Other States

(Miami, FL) --About 40-percent of Florida college professors say they either have or will soon apply for jobs out of state. Those responding to a United Faculty of Florida poll cite low pay, high cost of living and LGBTQ and DEI issues. Pre-K through 12th grade teachers are also moving out for some of the same reasons. Governor DeSantis has touted investing more than four-billion dollars in teacher pay increases since he got in office, with the average teacher salary at more than 54-thousand dollars.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office investigators continued probing a Friday shooting that killed a woman — who was neither a participant nor the intended target — in a Tropical Manor Apartments parking lot on Merritt Island, a press release said.

The victim was Tasha Smith, a 36-year-old Merritt Island resident. Tropical Manor is off Jordan Road across the street from Gardendale Elementary.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the area about 12:20 a.m. Friday, checking out a report of a loud disturbance.

"Preliminary investigation at the scene determined that the incident initially began as a physical altercation in the parking lot. The altercation escalated, to the point where two males exchanged gunfire. Ms. Smith was not a participant in the shooting, however was in the area at the time she was shot. It does not appear that she was the intended target," the BCSO press release said.

Two shooting incidents in and near the Eddie Lee Taylor, Sr. Community Complex in Melbourne on Saturday left an unidentified man dead and two other men hospitalized in critical condition.

Melbourne detectives are investigating, trying to determine whether the incidents were connected.

Youth football games had attracted a crowd to the park at the time of the fatal shooting. Police believe a large crowd also gathered throughout the park after the funeral of Craig "Dew" Dewberry Jr., according to a press release. The 27-year-old Palm Bay resident was killed Sept. 10 during a robbery at nearby Tip Top Mini Mart on Monroe Street, and a 21-year-old Homestead man was charged with first degree murder in his death.

Orlando Police Launch Use Of Force Investigation

(Orlando, FL) --An investigation is underway after an interaction with protesters and Orlando Police officers turned physical. It happened Saturday during a Central Florida Queers for Palestine protest near Lake Eola. Video shows an officer on a bicycle separating two women who were arguing. One of the women fell. That led to protesters confronting police, and eight arrests were made. The OPD says it has opened a use-of-force investigation.
