Judge To Take Up Case Over Cultivated Meat Sales In Florida

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A Florida law banning the production of lab-grown meat will go before a federal judge in less than a month. California-based UPSIDE Foods, Inc. has filed a motion to block the legislation that was signed into law earlier this year. The company filed a lawsuit last month, saying federal law centered around poultry products prevents the state from implementing a ban on cultivated meat.Meanwhile, Florida's Agriculture commissioner, Wilton Simpson, has said the products have not been proven safe for consumers. The state has until next week to file a response for the preliminary injunction.A hearing is scheduled on October 7th.

Hearing Scheduled In Florida's Title IX Challenge

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A hearing will take place later this year in Florida's challenge over a federal rule regarding sex-based discrimination in education. An appeals court kicked off the week by saying it will hear arguments for the Title IX case on December 16th in Atlanta. Florida is one of four states who are fighting back against the regulations that prohibit discrimination in schools based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The states won a preliminary injunction against the rule last month, which will prevent the rule from going into effect while the latest appeal plays out in court.

Volusia County Man Arrested For Child Sex Crime

(Bunnell, FL) -- A Volusia County man is facing child sex charges in Flagler County. Daytona Beach's Alfred Smith was arrested Monday in Palm Coast. The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says the 25-year-old went to a gas station to meet a 16-year-old girl. The girl he thought he was communicating with online turned out to be an undercover deputy, though. Smith was on probation at the time of his arrest for molesting a victim between 12 and 18-years-old. Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly says it's obvious Smith learned nothing from his prior offense, and now it's time for him to learn a lesson in prison before he can hurt a child.

Today in History

2012, Christopher Stevens, the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, was among four Americans killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

2011, the 9/11 Memorial Museum opened to the public in New York City on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

2001, nearly three-thousand people were killed in the worst terror attack on U.S. soil. Nineteen men hijacked four planes in a coordinated attack. Two planes were slammed into the World Trade Center, causing the massive Twin Towers to collapse and change the New York City skyline forever. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon, while the fourth went down in Pennsylvania after the passengers on board revolted against their hijackers. The attack was traced to the terrorist group al-Qaeda, which led to a war in Afghanistan and eventually the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011.

1941, construction on the Pentagon began. It was completed and dedicated on January 15, 1943.
