Citizens Wants To Raise Florida Insurance Rates
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida's largest insurance provider is trying to raise its rates. State regulators met last week to discuss an average 14-percent hike requested by Citizens' Property Insurance. Leaders with the state-backed insurer approved the increase for more than one-million policyholders earlier this summer. WESH reports that the company's CEO says the change is designed to reduce the risk of assessments on non-Citizen policyholders and to help the insurance market recover. The state is expected to make a final decision later this month. If approved, the change would take effect in January.
Teen Accused Of Killing Mother To Face Adult Charges
(Palm Bay, FL) -- A Florida teenager accused of killing her mom and mom's boyfriend will face adult charges. A grand jury indicted 16-year-old Julia Egler on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder yesterday. Palm Bay police say Egler staged a home invasion before calling 9-1-1 and claiming an intruder killed the victims. The teen allegedly told officers that she was upset her mother did not accept her gender transition. Investigators say Egler also disapproved of her mother dating someone who was 16 years younger than her. Due to a state law, the young suspect will not face the death penalty.
Florida Python Challenge Kicks Off On Friday
(Homestead, FL) -- The 2024 Python Challenge will kick off in the Florida Everglades in just a matter of days. The 11th annual competition is designed to remove the invasive Burmese pythons from the state's ecosystem because they pose a threat to native wildlife. Participants must find and kill the snakes within one of the seven eligible areas in order for their entries to be accepted. Cash prizes will go out to contestants who catch the most and largest pythons. Nearly two-hundred pythons were removed last year. The challenge will begin on Friday and run through August 18th.
