DeLand City Commissioners Discuss Allowing Tiny Homes
(DeLand, FL) --A city in Volusia County is considering a new approach to address its housing problems. The DeLand City Commission met yesterday and discussed allowing tiny homes in the Core Gateway Overlay. They would be between 200 and 600 square feet. Commissioners say developers are interested, but the commission would need to change the city's zoning laws. News 6 reports no final vote was taken, but the commission decided to do more research on the issue.
HillsCo Woman Bitten By Alligator
(Temple Terrace, FL) -- A Hillsborough County woman believes it's a miracle she survived an encounter with an alligator. Temple Terrace's Rachel Thompson was bitten on the leg July 4th while standing in shallow water in the Hillsborough River. She says she remembered thinking she had just one chance to fight off the gator before it rolled her, so she punched it in the snout. The gator swam away, and Thompson was able to get to the hospital for surgery. She says she suffered a fractured fibula, but no major nerves were severed. Thompson tells ABC Action News she'll be on crutches for a couple months, but she expects to make full recovery. Meanwhile, a trapper found the 10-foot gator and euthanized it.
Man Bitten By Shark In Keys
(Key West, FL) --A man is hurt after he was bitten by a shark off Monroe County. It happened yesterday afternoon off Key West. The sheriff's office says he was bitten while he was spearfishing on the reef. He was brought to shore on Stock Island and airlifted to the hospital. Deputies say he was alert and responsive, but there's no word on his condition.
Spam Unveils New Flavor
(Austin, MN) --Spam is unveiling a new favor. Minnesota-based Hormel Foods says the new offering is called Korean BBQ. They describe it as "sweet yet spicy." The new flavor becomes the 12th permanent variety of SPAM.
