State Regulators To Study New Nuclear Power Plant
(Tallahassee, FL)-- Regulators are considering building a new nuclear power plant in Florida. The state Public Service Commission is expected to hold a workshop later this summer to discuss a study that will look at the feasibility of using more of these kinds of technologies at military bases. Currently, a Florida House analysis states that nuclear operations create about 13-percent of the state's electricity. The latest effort is part of a wide-ranging energy bill approved during the latest legislative session. The goal is to submit a feasibility report by next April.
Cyber Security Expert Advises Against Paying Ransom To Hackers
(Maitland, FL)-- A cyber security expert in Orange County commends Florida's approach to a recent data breach. Hackers last month got into the Florida Department of Health's vital statistics system. Ever since, people have been unable to access birth and death certificates online. There's no word on how much the hackers want, where they're from or when the system will be restored. Rob Allen is chief product officer for ThreatLocker in Maitland, and he says Florida officials should stick to their policy of not paying ransom. He tells News 6 paying ransom is a slippery slope, and if nobody paid, there'd be no such thing as ransomware because it wouldn't pay to do it.
K9 Catches Carjacking Suspect In Polk County
(Mulberry, FL)-- A K9 is credited with taking down an armed Pinellas County man in Polk County. It happened yesterday afternoon near Mulberry on SR 60. A man wanted for the armed carjacking of a pickup truck in St. Petersburg yesterday morning was seen in Lake Wales, and deputies tried pulling him over. The man kept going, though, and wound up crashing. A woman in the truck surrendered, but the driver remained in the truck, armed. Deputies say a K9 named Odin was released and took the man into custody. He was identified as 35-year-old Cory Stowers. Charges are pending.
Indialantic Boardwalk Damaged By Drunk Drivers
(Indialantic, FL)-- Indialantic Police say a drunk driver damaged the boardwalk Friday morning. Mayor Mark McDermott says this is the third or fourth time this has happened. He wants to hire an engineer or urban planner to suggest ways to make sure it doesn't happen again. McDermott tells Fox 35 every time it gets damaged, it's frustrating.
Parkland Mass Shooter Agrees To Donate Brain To Science In Civil Settlement With Victim
(Parkland, FL)-- Parkland mass shooter Nikolas Cruz is donating his brain to science in a civil settlement with one of his victims. Cruz murdered 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. An attorney for 21-year-old Anthony Borges, who was shot five times, proposed the "unique" stipulation. He told Fox News Digital "I figured if scientists studied his brain they might be able to figure out what created this monster."25-year-old Cruz is serving life in prison.
