U.S. Supreme Court Won't Hear Arguments Over Online Sports Betting
(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear arguments in Florida's online sports betting case. Justices made the decision yesterday after they held a private meeting last week. The ruling will allow mobile sports betting to continue in the state for the next several years. West Flagler and other gambling companies were challenging the state's gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe, claiming it unfairly operated a betting monopoly. The Florida Supreme Court issued a similar ruling earlier this year.
McDonald's Employee Arrested For Shooting At Customers In Polk County
(Lakeland, FL) --A woman is facing charges in Polk County after Lakeland Police say McMayhem broke out. The PD yesterday released the details of what happened Friday at a McDonald's on East Memorial Boulevard. According to officers, customers in the drive-thru told employee Chassidy Gardner their order was wrong. That led to an argument, and Gardner threw a drink at the customers. Two customers then threw drinks through the window at Gardner. At that point, police say Gardner got her gun and went outside to confront the customers. As they were trying to leave, Gardner allegedly shot at their car and hit it at least once. No one was hurt. The 22-year-old Gardner was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. You can see video of the incident at Facebook.com/LakelandPD.
Orlando City Commission Candidates Have Heated Exchange
(Orlando, FL) --Things appear to be getting heated in an Orlando special election. Travaris McCurdy and Shan Rose are running in the city commission District Five race to replace Regina Hill. Yesterday, McCurdy accused Rose of trying to extort him, through text message, by threatening to release details about criminal allegations made against him if he didn't drop out of the race. McCurdy's campaign manager says they contacted police, but Rose denies sending McCurdy the text message. The criminal allegations against McCurdy never led to any charges. Rose, though, tells the Orlando Sentinel that doesn't mitigate that he has a horrible arrest record and police record. Polls are open today from 7:00 to 7:00, and you can find your polling place at OCFElections.gov.
Lake County Property Appraiser Left Off Ballot
(Tavares, FL) --A last-minute change could cost Lake County's property appraiser his job. Carey Baker has served three terms. In the last two elections, he ran as a write-in candidate to avoid paying the 10-thousand dollar filing fee, and he didn't have an opponent. Baker thought he could do the same thing for this November's election, and when he left the elections office Friday, that's how things appeared. He learned later, though, after the filing deadline, that Republican Mark Jordan had filed to run, so his name will be on the ballot, and Baker's will not. In a county that typically votes Republican, Jordan could have an advantage over Baker. Jordan's brother is the Lake County Tax Collector, and Baker believes the Jordan brothers collaborated on this. Baker knows the Jordans, and he tells the Orlando Sentinel this is probably the greatest personal betrayal he has ever experienced.
