Nat'l Hurricane Center Watching Tropical Depression That Could Strengthen Next Week
(Tampa, FL) -- The National Hurricane Center is watching a new tropical disturbance that is forming in the Atlantic. Meteorologists say the disturbance could form into a more serious storm system by the middle of next week. Forecasters say the system has a 20-percent chance of strengthening over the next week. Officials are also tracking a second system off Mexico's east coast that has to the potential to reach tropical-depression by mid-week.
HillsCo Deputy Recovers From Shooting
(Tampa, FL) -- A Hillsborough County deputy is on the road to recovery after what the sheriff calls a truly scary situation. Sheriff Chad Chronister released body-cam video yesterday from the scene of a deadly shooting Saturday in Tampa. Deputies say 19-year-old Christos Themelis, Jr. shot and killed his parents on Cactus Wren Place. When deputies arrived, Themelis allegedly fired towards them and five deputies returned fire. Themelis retreated into his home, and the SWAT team was called in. When they entered the home, Themelis was dead. Deputy Shane McGough was shot in the leg and had surgery yesterday. The 26-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. The FDLE is investigating.
Man Arrested After Attempted Kidnapping In Miami-Dade County
(Miami, FL) -- A man is accused of trying to kidnap a woman in Miami-Dade County. Police yesterday arrested a man they say was trying to force a woman into his car in West Little River. The man tried to drive away, but he wound up hitting a marked police car near Northwest 35th Ave and 101st Street. That led to a chase into Opa-locka where the man ditched his car and tried to get away on foot. He didn't get far before he was taken into custody.
Food Truck Stolen From Orlando Business
(Orlando, FL) -- An Orange County business owner is asking for help. Odane Mornan's food truck for Island Kitchen and Grill was stolen last week in Orlando on Edgewater Drive. Mornan noticed on Friday the truck was missing, and said he was in shock. He notified the sheriff's office, but the truck has yet to turn up. Mornan says his insurance company won't cover theft, and he's losing money with each passing day. He started the business in 2018, and he tells Channel 9 the truck is not just his livelihood, he had everything in this truck. Mornan asks anyone who knows anything about the truck's whereabouts to contact the sheriff's office or call 911.
FSU Beats UVA In MCWS
(Omaha, NE) -- Florida State's baseball team is still alive. FSU beat the University of Virginia 7-3 yesterday in the College World Series in Omaha. The Seminoles would have been eliminated with a loss. Junior outfielder Jamie Ferrer hit two home runs for the Noles. FSU needs to win again today, though, to stay alive. They'll play the University of North Carolina at 2 p.m.
Ride Stuck With Passengers Upside Down
(Portland, OR)-- A ride at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland got stuck Friday afternoon leaving around 30 people stuck upside down about 50 feet off the ground. The Atmosphere 360 swings 180 degrees, like a pendulum, and can also rotate in full circles. Engineers at the park were able to manually lower the ride after about 20 minutes. All of the passengers were evaluated by medics. There were no significant injuries. The investigation into the cause of the malfunction is ongoing.
