Federal Judge Strikes Down State Immigration Law

(Tallahassee, FL) --Immigration advocates call a judge's ruling a much-needed win for Floridians. That's what the ACLU said yesterday after a federal judge temporarily blocked enforcement of part of SB 1781. It went into effect less than a year ago, and part of it makes it illegal to transport illegal immigrants from another state into Florida. The judge, though, says that extends beyond the state's authority because the federal government has supremacy when it comes to immigration. He also says those affected by the law would suffer irreparable harm by being separated from their families and denied services like medical care. The ACLU represented the Farmworker Association of Florida and some of its members who sued last summer to block the law.

Florida To Begin Repealing Renewable Energy Goals

(Tallahassee, FL) -- The state of Florida is moving forward with a plan to repeal its renewable energy goals. The state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services published a proposal earlier yesterday, saying the strategies are no longer necessary. The goals were approved in 2022 to get utility companies to gradually increase their renewable energy usage over the next 26 years. The effort to repeal the order is part of a state law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis last week. The legislation, which is set to take effect in July, will also ban offshore wind-energy generation, while encouraging the use of an affordable energy supply.

School Staffers Cleared Following Trans Athlete Investigation

(Coconut Creek, FL) -- Three South Florida school employees are allowed to return to work following a months-long investigation over a female transgender athlete. The Broward County school district says the principal of Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, and two other staffers, have been cleared of any wrongdoing. The state started looking into the case last November after finding out the school allowed the athlete to play on the girls' volleyball team, which goes against Florida law. There is still a fourth employee under investigation. The district was required to pay more than 16-thousand dollars in fines.

Scott Running For Senate Republican Leader

(Washington, DC) --Rick Scott wants to expand his influence in Washington. Senator Scott said yesterday he wants to succeed Mitch McConnell as Senate GOP leader. McConnell has announced he plans to step down in November. Scott tells Fox News he's a change agent, and he's going to change the Senate to help Donald Trump get his conservative agenda done. The former governor ran for Senate Republican leader two years ago but lost to McConnell. This time, he's facing South Dakota's John Thune and Texas' John Cornyn. CNN reports Scott would be considered an underdog.

Dream Chaser Arrives At KSC

(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- A company has high hopes for a new arrival at Kennedy Space Center. Sierra Space's Dream Chaser spaceplane called Tenacity arrived Saturday from Ohio. The plane will make its first flight to the International Space Station sometime this year. It'll be attached to a United Launch Alliance Vulcan rocket that'll blast off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The space plane's design, though, allows it to land back on Earth on a runway, like an airplane or NASA's space shuttle. A Sierra Space official says this could allow the plane to carry passengers one day. She tells Fox 35 News Dream Chaser is going to change the way we travel to space.

Man Receives Live Rattlesnake In Mail

(Twentynine Palms, CA) -- It's not unusual to see a rattlesnake in California's Mojave Desert, but it's another thing to find one in your mailbox. A 60-year-old truck driver went to the local Post Office in the town of Twentynine Palms last week to check on his mail. He found a package inside, marked "fragile," with a Florida return address. He brought the package back to his truck, where a friend was waiting. He asked his friend to open the package as they drove away. Inside was a live rattlesnake hissing and ready to strike. Whoever sent the package put cotton balls inside to muffle the sound of the snake's rattle. The snake did not bite, but both men agree this is a case of attempted murder. The package originated in Hayward, California, and the Postmaster General is investigating. The snake was handed over to Animal Control.

Spelling Error Found On Diplomas

(Chesterfield, VA) --Students who graduated from a school in Virginia may notice something odd about their diplomas. Matoaca High School held its graduation ceremony on Monday, but the school's name was misspelled on the diplomas. One student says it's a little absurd, and people aren't happy, especially parents. A school district spokesperson tells 12 On Your Side, new diplomas with the correct spelling have been ordered.
