Former JSO Officer Pleads Guilty To Giving Information To Criminals
(Jacksonville, FL) -- A former Jacksonville Sheriff's officer accused of illegally giving information to criminals is taking responsibility for his actions. Twenty-eight-year-old Christopher Barr entered a guilty plea while at a hearing in Duval County court yesterday. Sheriff T.K. Waters has previously said that there's a strong possibility Barr's arrest this past January is tied to gang activity in the city. Barr is facing up to ten years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 17th.
Man Arrested For Deadly Marion County Crash
(Ocala, FL) -- Alcohol is suspected in a deadly crash in Marion County. Bryan Maclean Howard was arrested yesterday after his pickup truck hit a bus on SR 40 in Dunnellon. The bus was carrying 53 migrant farm workers, who were hired to work on a watermelon farm. Eight onboard the bus died at the scene, and 37 were hurt. FHP says the 41-year-old Howard is facing eight counts of DUI manslaughter.
Stabbing Victim Shows Up At St. Pete School
(St. Petersburg, FL)-- A man is hurt after a road rage stabbing yesterday in St. Petersburg. Police say the 28-year-old got into a fight with Jose Rafael Rabel Oneill and was stabbed multiple times. The victim then showed up at Sexton Elementary School on 54th Ave and said he wanted to pick up a child and get treated for his stab wounds. He was taken to the hospital, and police say he's in serious but stable condition. The 34-year-old Oneill is charged with attempted homicide.
Shots Fired At MDPD Officers
(Miami, FL) -- Three men are facing charges after shots were fired at Miami-Dade Police officers. It happened Monday night near Miami Shores on Northwest 96th Street as two officers were driving in an unmarked Jeep. The MDPD says the officers were following a car that appeared to have illegally-tinted windows, and when the car stopped, two men got out. After the officers drove by, shots were fired and the Jeep was hit at least five times. No one was hurt. Police arrested 23-year-old Skylar Richardson and 21-year-old Karyne David for attempted murder on a law enforcement officer. Another man with Richardson and David was arrested for charges related to another case.
AdventHealth University Dean Accused Of Embezzlement
(Orlando, FL) -- An official at an Orlando school is accused of embezzlement. The charges filed Friday against AdventHealth University Dean of Nursing Laura Jean Fero date back to when she was dean at a school in Minnesota. The 54-year-old allegedly steered 400-thousand dollars worth of school contracts to her boyfriend's business. Prosecutors say that business offered little or no services in return. This allegedly went on for three years, starting in 2020, but it wasn't found out until Fero quit and took the job at AdventHealth University last year. She was arrested last Wednesday when she flew back to Minnesota. A spokeswoman for AdventHealth University tells the Orlando Sentinel, it does not comment on private personnel matters or pending legal matters.
Boat Seized In Investigation Of Girl's Waterskiing Death
(Miami, FL) -- What could be a key piece of evidence in a girl's death is now in the custody of the FWC. Investigators yesterday seized a boat that may have hit and killed 15-year-old Ella Adler last weekend. She was waterskiing in Biscayne Bay when she was hit by a boat that fled the scene. The boat was found in Coral Gables behind a home on Tanya Street. FWC says the boat's owner is cooperating. The Adler family released a statement thanking law enforcement for their hard work and commitment to helping bring some closure to this horrific loss.
Crewed Boeing Mission Pushed Back Again
(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- Technical issues are continuing to push back the first crewed flight of NASA's newest spaceship. Several space agencies attached to the mission are now targeting a new launch date of Boeing's Starliner capsule no earlier than Tuesday, May 21st. A pressure regulation valve was successfully replaced on the Atlas V rocket connected to the spacecraft. However, crews are still working on resolving a leak found within the Starliner. The initial launch was supposed to take place last week. If everything goes as planned next Tuesday, two astronauts onboard the Starliner will start their journey to the International Space Station.
Government Opens Investigation Into Automated Driving Company Waymo
(Washington, DC)-- Waymo is the latest self-driving vehicle company under a government investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted documents detailing the probe on its website after getting 22 reports of Waymo vehicles either crashing or violating traffic laws. The Mountain View, California-based company is operating self-driving robotaxis in Arizona and California. Waymo says it's committed to safety and transparency.
