Bob Graham Passes Away

(Tallahassee, FL) Former Democratic State Rep, State Senator, Governor and US Senator Bob Graham died yesterday at the age of 87. He was born in Coral Gables in 1936. After graduating Miami Senior High School he went to the University of Florida and Harvard Law School before entering politics.

Graham was first elected to office in 1966 when he won election to the state house at the age of 29. After two terms he was elected to the state senate where he served three terms before running for governor. Graham was elected governor in 1978, and after two terms, he was elected to the US Senate in 1986 where he served three terms until 2005.

All told, he held elected office for 38 years in a row and never lost an election.

DeSantis Signs Education Bill Limiting Book Challenges

(Jacksonville, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis is supporting changes to Florida's education system. While in Jacksonville yesterday, DeSantis signed a bill that will limit school district book challenges for residents who are not parents. The measure will also speed up the process for charter schools taking over operations of low-performing public schools by setting deadlines. DeSantis says Florida is the number one state in the country for education because it focuses on core academic courses and rejects indoctrination in the classroom. Nearly 30 more bills were placed on the governor's desk yesterday.

Volusia County Removes Waiting Period For Private Gun Sales

(DeLand, FL) --You may find it easier to buy a gun in Volusia County. The county council voted yesterday to remove a three-day waiting period and background check for private gun show sales. This change does not apply to licensed dealers. Opponents say the change could be dangerous because it removes a cooling-off period, especially for those who may have mental health problems.  Supporters, though, say those who use guns to commit crimes probably aren't buying them legally, anyway. Councilman Daniel Robins says criminals and bad people are going to find a way.

Pulse Victims And Survivors Discuss New Memorial Coordinator

(Orlando, FL) --The man in charge of putting together the Pulse memorial may be met with skepticism. The city of Orlando last week hired Dr. Larry Schooler to collect ideas for the project. Some of those who lost loved ones in the 2016 mass shooting and those who survived the shooting are hesitant, though, after their experience with the onePulse Foundation. The foundation was supposed to come up with a memorial, but it never did and wound up being dissolved. A woman who survived the shooting says she wants to keep an open mind about Dr. Schooler, but she's very hesitant. The mother of one victim says she gets disgusted every time she goes to the site of the former nightclub. Dr. Schooler plans to address that skepticism when he starts meeting with stakeholders next month. He tells Channel 9 the only way to develop trust is through deeds through actions.

Man Tries To Rob Store With Snake Around His Neck

(Memphis, TN) --A man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to rob a convenience store with a five-foot snake around his neck. Police in Memphis, Tennessee, say Reginald Cook initially went into the store around 2:00a.m. and demanded money from the register. The cashier refused and Cook left. He returned again about an hour later, this time, with the snake wrapped around his neck and again demanded money. Cook also reportedly reached into his backpack and that's when the clerk grabbed his own gun in self-defense. Police showed up before any shots were fired and Cook was arrested.
