DeSantis Plans To Sign Sweeping Education Package

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Governor Ron DeSantis is planning to sign a sweeping education bill package when it hits his desk. He was in Pensacola yesterday, where he explained how the new measures would limit book challenges and clarify the process to convert struggling schools into charter schools. Another piece of legislation would also support military families' transition to Florida schools. DeSantis says more education announcements are expected today.

Seminole County Sheriff Shares Details On Carjacking Case

(Sanford, FL) --A car linked to a carjacking investigation in Seminole County could also be connected to a deadly shooting in Orange County. Seminole Sheriff Dennis Lemma shared details yesterday on the investigation into Thursday's carjacking near Winter Springs. Lemma says a 31-year-old Miami-Dade County woman was carjacked by someone in an Acura. The woman's SUV was found burned in Osceola County with her body inside on Friday. Lemma says the Acura is tied to a deadly shooting in Taft last Wednesday, the day before the carjacking. The victim was the tow truck driver who towed the car from an Orange County apartment complex last month. The Acura has since been found and is at the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Investigators hope it holds clues to who the alleged carjacker was.

Orange County Deputy Arrested In Seminole County

(Sanford, FL) --An Orange County deputy is facing what his boss calls very serious criminal allegations. Sheriff John Mina announced yesterday that Deputy Francisco Estrella was arrested Sunday in Seminole County. Estrella allegedly posed as a detective under a fake name to get information from a Seminole County detective investigating last week's carjacking near Winter Springs. Investigators believe he was trying to get information he could share with the carjacking victim's husband. The two are connected through a childhood friendship with Estrella's wife. Estrella is facing charges that include interception of wire, oral or electronic communication. The 33-year-old has been with the department less than two years, and he's now on unpaid administrative leave. Mina says it's completely unacceptable for any law enforcement officer to misuse the power and authority of their job.

Monroe County Deputy Arrested

(Key West, FL) --A Monroe County deputy is facing criminal charges. The sheriff's office announced yesterday that Deputy Alexander Morales, Jr. was arrested by Key West Police. The 26-year-old allegedly broke into an ex-girlfriend's home through the bedroom window yesterday morning. Police say he was confronting her about a domestic issue. No injuries were reported. Morales is charged with felony burglary of a dwelling and misdemeanor criminal mischief. Sheriff Rick Ramsay says the two-year veteran is now on unpaid administrative leave, and Internal Affairs is investigating.

Therapy K9 Goes To Prom

(Satellite Beach, FL) -- A therapy dog is proving to be a popular addition at a Brevard County school. Satellite Beach Police yesterday reflected on the positive impact therapy K9 Layla had this year at Satellite High School. The SBPD writes on Facebook it has been an exciting and meaningful year for Layla and her partner, SRO Corporal Jay Bergeron. Layla is the school's first ever therapy K9, and police say she exceeded everyone's expectations. They credit Layla for an unmatched calming presence, especially when students are upset, sad or anxious. Layla even got to go to the prom last weekend, and you can see a photo of her in her prom dress and tiara on the SBPD's Facebook page.

(Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) -- A pilot and a dog are alive after a small plane landed in the ocean off Rancho Palos Verdes in California. The pilot and dog swam to shore after the landing, which happened at about 5:20 Sunday afternoon. It's unclear what prompted the pilot to land in the water. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard are working to recover the plane.

Most Americans Say They'd Feel Better With More Sleep

(Washington, DC) --The majority of Americans say they'd feel better if they had more sleep. A Gallup survey showed that 57-percent say they'd benefit from more sleep, compared to 42-percent who say they get enough sleep. This is the first time since Gallup began polling the question in 2001 less than half said they get as much sleep as they need. The last time the poll was conducted in 2013, the numbers were nearly reversed, with 56-percent saying they get enough sleep.
