(Titusville, FL)-- There'll be extra security at a school in Rockledge today.. District officials announced yesterday that someone sent an email threatening a shooting at Anderson Elementary. Extra law enforcement will be on hand as a precaution.The district says it takes threats seriously, and it'll work to ensure everyone's safety during the investigative process.
Man Arrested In Brevard County Murder Last Month
(Melbourne, FL) -- A man is facing charges in connection to a Brevard County murder last month. Melbourne police say they arrested 26-year-old Chasemichael Smith yesterday. He is accused of killing 32-year-old Kenneth Johnson at his home in the Lakeview Shores neighborhood on February 24th. Investigators have still not explained how Smith died. Johnson has been booked into jail on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and grand theft.
Escaped Treasure Coast Prisoner Captured In Orlando
(Orlando, FL) -- An escaped prisoner from Florida's Treasure Coast is back in custody after more than a month on the run. The U.S. Marshals Service says 19-year-old Justice Reynolds was captured in Orlando on Wednesday. Reynolds has been at-large since the beginning of February when he walked away from the Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. He is an inmate at Everglades Youth Academy in Okeechobee and will be brought back to St. Lucie County to face new charges related to his escape.
Police-Involved Shooting In Miami
(Miami, FL) -- A man is hurt after he was shot by police officers in Miami. It happened yesterday afternoon in Model City on Northwest 57th Street and 7th Court. Police say the 40-year-old was acting erratically due to drug use, and he was not following orders. A Taser seemed to have no effect, and that's when police opened fire. CBS News Miami reports video taken by witnesses shows the man had a sharp object in his hand and about ten shots were fired. His mother says his name is Donald Armstrong, and she confirms he was under the influence of drugs. She also tells NBC 6, though, that the object he was holding was a screwdriver. He underwent surgery last night, and he's in critical but stable condition. FDLE is investigating.
Wheel Falls Off Plane Carrying Osceola County Students
(Kissimmee, FL)-- A trip to Japan is off to an unsettling start for some Osceola County students. A plane heading from San Francisco to Japan had to turn around after losing a wheel. The school district says 15 students from Gateway High School and three chaperones were on board. The United Airlines jet landed safely in Los Angeles, and no one was hurt. A district official tells News 6 the school's principal was in close communication with the group throughout the ordeal.
Tech Group Asks DeSantis To Veto Social Media Bill
(Tallahassee, FL) -- A Florida bill designed to keep children off social media is getting some pushback as it heads to the governor's desk. Tech-industry group NetChoice sent a letter to Governor Ron DeSantis asking him to veto the measure that bans anyone 13 years or young from accessing certain platforms. The revised proposal that was approved by the state House and Senate this week would allow kids who are 14 and 15 years old on certain sites if their parents give them approval. NetChoice says courts have blocked similar laws in other states. DeSantis is expected to sign the legislation into law.
School Chaplain Bill Passes Senate
(Tallahassee, FL)-- A Marion County lawmaker's plan to allow chaplains in public schools is a step away from becoming law. The state senate yesterday passed the School Chaplains Bill. Ocala State Rep. Stan McClain sponsored HB 931. It authorizes school districts and charter schools to allow volunteer school chaplains to counsel students. The bill now goes to Governor DeSantis for his signature. If he signs it, it would take effect July First.
Man Arrested At Clearwater City Council Meeting
(Clearwater, FL)-- A man is facing charges after disrupting a public meeting in Pinellas County. Clearwater Police last night arrested Daniel Holuba for trespassing after he refused to leave the city council meeting. Mayor Brian Aungst asked Holuba to leave because he violated the city's rules of conduct. He criticized several city officials and accused Aungst of having thin skin.After a back-and-forth, Aungst asked police to remove Holuba, and when he refused, he was given a trespass warning. When told he would be arrested if he didn't leave, Holuba dared officers to arrest him, and they did. The Tampa Bay Times reports the 67-year-old was handcuffed and removed from the room.
Frostbitten Fans From Dolphins-Chief Game Might Need Amputations
(Kansas City, MO)-- Those that suffered frostbite in Kansas City in January may need amputations. Grossman Burn Center Medical Director Dr. Megan Garcia said 70-percent of people who got frostbite in the below zero temperatures are now being told to schedule amputation procedures. Many of those were fans who attended the playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The temperature was negative-four at kick off with a wind chill of negative 27-degrees. Garcia said she thinks the number of amputations will be between ten and 20.
