Mick's Morning News- Thursday

Hemp Bill Passes Legislature

(Tallahassee, FL) --Those who buy hemp-based products may be affected by a vote in Tallahassee. State lawmakers yesterday approved a bill that restricts the making, buying and selling of hemp extract and bans delta-8 THC. Lakeland Republican State Senator Colleen Burton introduced SB 1698. It limits the amount of THC to five milligrams per serving or 50 milligrams per package. Opponents say it could lead to the arrests of those who use hemp-based products like CBD. Lakewood Ranch State Rep. Tommy Gregory sponsored the bill in the House, and he says the bill is more about closing a loophole that manufacturers used to make their products intoxicating. If Governor DeSantis signs the bill, it'll take effect July First.

Petito-Backed Bill Passes Legislature

(Tallahassee, FL) --Gabby Petito's father is celebrating what he calls a significant milestone in the fight against domestic violence. Joe Petito was talking yesterday about a domestic violence bill that unanimously passed the state legislature. SB 1224 requires law enforcement officers to assess the risk a domestic violence victim faces by asking 12 questions. After questioning, the victim could be directed to a certified domestic violence shelter. The questionnaire is part of what's called Lethality Assessment Training that's already used in 32 states. The bill goes to the governor's desk for his signature. Petito lost his daughter, Gabby, of Sarasota, to domestic violence three years ago. He tells News Channel 8 he's thrilled to see the bill pass, and it brings hope and protection to survivors, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Balloon Releases Closer To Being Banned In Florida

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A proposal banning the release of balloons is heading to the desk of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The bill would consider the action a form of littering. Violators would face a 150-dollar fine with a portion of the money going to the Solid Waste Management Trust Fund. The measure would also increase punishments for anyone who intentionally throws debris or trash onto private property. The legislation could become law as soon as July.

Haitians Losing Hope

(Miami, FL) --When it comes to Haiti, there is no hope. That's what one Miami-Dade County resident said yesterday as the news from her homeland seems to get worse every day. The government has apparently collapsed, and gangs seem to be in charge. A woman named Theone has an aunt, nieces and nephews in Haiti, and she says they're too scared to leave the house even for food. A man in Little Haiti says it's a shame to think of what's going on there. Theone tells CBS News Miami the Haiti she knew is not the same, and the country she always dreamed would have a better future doesn't exist anymore.

Man Arrested For Drive-Thru Attack In St. Pete

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- A man is facing charges after apparently losing his cool in a drive-thru in St. Petersburg. Police this week arrested Sean Drake for allegedly attacking a man in the drive-thru lane of a Culver's on 34th Street North. Officers say the 37-year-old 'became frustrated with the victim's vehicle in front of him' so he rammed it several times with his own car. When the other driver confronted Drake, Drake allegedly hit the man and knocked him onto the hood of Drake's car. Police say Drake then drove off with the man on his hood before the man fell off and suffered minor injuries. Police say during questioning, Drake appeared to be drunk, was belligerent and had to be Tased. He's charged with aggravated battery, DUI and resisting arrest.
