DeSantis Vetoes Bill Banning Social Media For Kids

(Tallahassee, FL) --Governor Ron DeSantis is vetoing legislation that would have banned social media accounts for kids under 16.DeSantis vetoed the bill on Friday, claiming Florida lawmakers were "about to produce a different, superior bill." The governor said protecting children from the harms of social media is important, but so is "maintaining the ability of adults to engage in anonymous speech."DeSantis believes the upcoming new bill will deal with both of his concerns and strike a balance between regulation and parental input.

University Of Florida Fires All DEI Employees

(Gainesville, FL)-- All employees in the University of Florida's Diversity, Equity, and inclusion office have been fired. The memo was sent out Friday afternoon that everyone would be let go to comply with the State's new law banning the offices. The fired employees will be given the customary twelve weeks pay and will be given expedited consideration for different positions currently open at the university.

NASA Has Successful Launch

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- Somewhere above the Space Coast is a capsule carrying four people to the International Space Station. The NASA, SpaceX Crew-8 mission launched last night from Kennedy Space Center at 10:53. Three men and a woman are on board. They'll spend six months at the ISS conducting about 200 experiments. Docking is expected to take place Tuesday morning at 3:00. 

Drunk Driver Arrested Again In St. Pete

(St. Petersburg, FL)  -- A man with a history of driving offenses is behind bars again. Barnard Stokes, Jr. was arrested yesterday in St. Petersburg. FHP says he was going about 140 miles an hour while drunk and driving with a suspended license. The 39-year-old has been convicted of driving with a suspended license nine times. Troopers say they tried to pull over Stokes in Tampa, but he refused to stop and kept going into St. Pete. He stopped when the car became disabled near 22nd Street and 54th Ave. Stokes tried to run but was caught. He's also charged with fleeing to elude, and this is his third charge for that. 

Officer Recovering After Accidental Shooting

(Miami, FL) -- A police officer appears to be on the road to recovery after an accidental shooting in Miami-Dade County. A Miami Beach Police officer is in the hospital after he was shot in the leg by a fellow officer Saturday on the Venetian Causeway. Police came across a man they believed may have been armed, and during a chase the officer fired her weapon, and a bullet hit the other officer. No one else was hurt. The injured officer is expected to survive, and 7News reports he may be released from the hospital in a few days.      

Dog Who Apparently Ingested Marijuana Found Sleeping In The Middle Of The Street

(Jackson, MS) -- Authorities in Jackson are investigating after a dog was found sleeping in the middle of the road after apparently ingesting marijuana. Workers from Animal Rescue transported the animal to a nearby shelter, where he tested positive for an extremely high level of cannabis. A veterinarian said his system will be flushed with fluid for the next 24 hours. Otherwise the large black dog seems to be healthy.

Deaths From Drinking Increased In The U.S. During The Pandemic

(Undated) -- Alcohol-related deaths surged during the pandemic. That's according to numbers from the CDC, which found that there were over 480 deaths per day from excessive drinking in the U.S. during the height of the pandemic. Officials say social isolation, stress, and delays in getting medical care could have been a factor. Alcohol carryout and home deliveries were also more available, officials added. The CDC says the spike in deaths could give states a reason to make alcohol less accessible.
