Girl Dies When Sand Hole Collapses At Broward County Beach
(Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, FL) -- A girl is dead after a trip to the beach turned tragic in Broward County. Fire Rescue says a five-year-old girl, a seven-year-old boy and some adults dug a six-foot hole in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea near El Mar Drive yesterday when the hole collapsed. The girl was completely covered, and the boy was buried up to his chest. She died at the scene. The boy was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Sixth Measles Case Reported At Broward County School
(Weston, FL) -- There's another case of measles at a Broward County school. District officials announced yesterday a sixth person at Weston's Manatee Bay Elementary School tested positive. Parents seem to be concerned. More than 20 percent of the school's students were absent yesterday. Six teachers were also out. Measles vaccines are required to attend public schools in Florida, but medical and religious exemptions are allowed. Superintendent Peter Licata says about 92 percent of the school is vaccinated.
Hiker Rescued After Using iPhone's SOS Feature
(Pasadena, CA)-- A hiker who got lost in the Angeles National Forest in California is back home after using his iPhone's SOS feature. He was hoping to see Switzer Falls on Sunday night. Instead, he got lost near the Arroyo Seco Research Foundation next to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. The emergency transponder on the man's phone alerted authorities, who dispatched a volunteer rescue crew to his location. He was found 90 minutes later. After that, he and the rescue crew had another two-hour hike to safety.
Delta To Offer Flights With Solar Eclipse Views
(Atlanta, GA) -- Delta Airlines will be offering flights with views of the total solar eclipse. The airline announced several flights for April 8th, with one flight specially designed to follow the path of totality. The flights will depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. and will land in Detroit. The aircraft type will be an Airbus A220-300 with extra large windows. Delta says other flights that day will also offer at least part of the solar eclipse view.
