Florida Supreme Court To Hear Arguments Over Abortion Amendment
(Tallahassee, FL) -- The Florida Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the latest battle over abortion rights. Justices will consider whether to approve the language of a proposed amendment for the November ballot that would protect access to abortions. Floridians Protecting Freedom received enough signatures to get the proposal on the ballot after launching a campaign last year. A ruling is expected by April 1st. The state currently prohibits abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A six-week ban was recently approved, but it's still making its way through the court system.
Florida Families File Lawsuits Against Snapchat
(New Port Richey, FL) -- Two Florida families are suing Snapchat in connection to deaths of their children. Jennifer Mitchell of Pasco County filed a lawsuit against the social media platform, claiming her 16-year-old son watched a video on the app about Russian Roulette. She told WTSP that her son recorded himself attempting the game before he was found dead. North Fort Myers' Diana Trujillo claims her 16-year-old son died from an edible laced with fentanyl after he connected with the wrong people on Snapchat. The families join two-thousand others who are taking legal action against social media giants, like Meta and TikTok.
Deadly Deputy-Involved Shooting In Orange County
(Orlando, FL) -- A man is dead after he was shot by deputies in Orange County. It happened yesterday afternoon in Orlando on Davisson Ave in the Lake Fairview community. Sheriff John Mina says the man was holding a knife as he ran toward the deputies. Mina says the man seemed extremely agitated and was yelling all kinds of expletives at the deputies. According to Mina, they told him to drop the knife, but he didn't and was shot. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away. No deputies were hurt. Mina says body cam footage will show the deputies really had no other choice.
Deadly Police Shooting In Seminole County
(Altamonte Springs, FL)-- An investigation is underway after a deadly police shooting in Seminole County. Altamonte Springs Police shot him around 5:30 p.m. yesterday in River Run. Police say 65-year-old Eric Seckington had a rifle, and he refused orders to drop it before he was shot and killed. The officer who shot him is on administrative leave while the FDLE investigates.
Hearing Continues Today To Determine Broward Sheriff's Fate
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A hearing that wraps today could have big consequences for the Broward County sheriff. The Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission hearing started yesterday to determine if Sheriff Gregory Tony lied on his driver's license application. While getting a replacement license five years ago, Tony checked 'no' on the form where applicants are asked if they ever had their license suspended. Tony's license, though, was suspended before in Pennsylvania. The DMV employee who processed the application told the commission she felt rushed that day because her supervisor wanted Tony in and out. Today is the final day of the hearing, and it could lead to Tony losing his law enforcement certification.
Man Arrested For Walking Around Naked At FLL
(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A man is in custody after apparently deciding to bare all at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Broward County deputies arrested Martin Evtimov on Monday for allegedly walking around the airport naked. The 36-year-old is facing charges that include exposing sexual organs, disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest. A judge yesterday ordered Evtimov to stay away from the airport and alcohol and drugs.
Taylor Swift Legal Team Threatens Action Against College Student Over Tracking Her Private Jet
(Miami, FL) -- Taylor Swift's legal team is threatening to sue a Florida college student who tracks celebrities' private jets. Jack Sweeney told CNN he received a cease-and-desist letter from Taylor Swift over the social media account he runs that tracks her private flights. Sweeney also ran a site which tracked Elon Musk's private jet before Musk shut down his account. Sweeney say he wants to point out the "carbon footprint" private jets create.
