Florida Organization Wants Medicaid Expansion On 2026 Ballot

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A Florida coalition is trying to get a Medicaid expansion amendment on the 2026 ballot. Florida Decides Healthcare kicked off its petition campaign earlier today in an effort to let voters decide whether the state should extend access for hundreds of thousands of residents. The group says the move would also benefit rural hospitals. The Sunshine State is one of ten in the country who have agreed not to expand their Medicaid programs. If the organization gets the required one-million signatures, the proposal would still need to get approval from the state Supreme Court.

Law Professor Doubts Legality Of Florida Troop Deployment

(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- The governor's decision to send troops to the US-Mexico border could be illegal. That's what Nova Southeastern University law professor Bob Jarvis said yesterday. He was responding to Governor Ron DeSantis' announcement that members of the National and State guards are being deployed to Texas. Jarvis says he doesn't think there's any question this flouts a recent Supreme Court ruling that states can't interfere with the federal government's handling of the border. Jarvis says it's also illegal under Florida law for the state guard to be deployed out-of-state. Jarvis predicts someone will sue to stop the deployment, but he tells the Orlando Sentinel the lawsuit will go nowhere because of the state supreme court's political makeup.

NASA Announces Target Date For Crewed Launch To ISS

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- Four astronauts are just weeks away from a trip to the International Space Station. NASA announced yesterday the launch of the Crew-8 mission to the ISS will take place no earlier than February 22nd from the Space Coast. The four-member crew led by Commander Matthew Dominick will blast off in a Dragon spacecraft called Endeavour on a Falcon 9 rocket. The crew will spend about six months at the ISS.

Winter Park Delays Fines From Leaf Blower Ban

(Winter Park, FL)-- Landscapers in part of Orange County are getting more time to comply with a new law. The Winter Park City Commission voted yesterday to delay imposing fines on those who violate a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. The ban passed in 2022 will go into effect in July, but violators will only get a warning. Fines won't be issued until January 2025.

Deadly Plane Crash In Pinellas County

(Clearwater, FL)-- People are dead after a plane crash in Pinellas County. It happened last night in Clearwater at Bayside Waters mobile home park on US 19. The Clearwater Fire and Rescue Department says a Beechcraft Bonanza V35 crashed into a home on Pagoda Drive. Four homes caught fire, and Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Ehlers said there were several fatalities, including the pilot. The FAA blames the crash on engine failure.

Child Porch Pirate Caught On Video

(Miami, FL) -- A search is underway to find a young porch pirate in Miami and the woman who encouraged him. Miami Police say a woman shared with them video of a boy stealing a package from her home in Silver Bluff on Monday. She estimates the boy was about six-years-old, and it appears the woman he was with told him to steal the package.  The victim tells Local 10 News the woman in the video should be ashamed, and she's not fit to be a mother if she puts her child through this.

Teen Claims Diplomatic Immunity After Crash Injures Officer

(Sunny Isles Beach, FL)-- An Israeli teenager may not have the legal protection he thinks he does after a crash that hurt a police officer in Miami-Dade County. Nineteen-year-old Avraham Gil was on his motorcycle last weekend when he allegedly hit a Sunny Isles Beach Police officer who was conducting a traffic stop. Gil's father is a consular officer in Miami, and after Gil claimed diplomatic immunity, he was released on his own recognizance. That may have been a mistake, though. The State Department says the teen does not have civil or criminal immunity, and the state attorney's office recently told CBS News Miami it's now proceeding with its investigation.

Tampa Neighbors Struggling To Find Source Of Mysterious Noise

(Tampa, FL) -- A Tampa woman is on a mission to find the source of a mysterious noise. Sara Healy lives in South Tampa where she and other residents have been hearing a strange noise for weeks. She says the noise has also been reported in Westshore, Ballast Point, Davis Island and Port Tampa. She started a GoFundMe page last month to pay for a study to find where the noise is coming from, and some speculate fish are responsible. The Black Drum Fish is known to emit a mating noise that can carry for miles. Dr. James Locascio has studied the Black Drum Fish, and he says residents in Southwest Florida reported a similar phenomenon almost 20 years ago. He wants to place recorders at homes on the coast to get to the bottom of this. Healy recently told News Channel 8 the fish theory sounds plausible, but people have also speculated secret operations at MacDill Air Force Base and even aliens.

Former Border Patrol Agent Guilty Of Helping Smuggle People And Drugs Into San Diego

(San Diego, CA)-- A former Border Patrol agent has pleaded guilty to smuggling people and drugs into the country. The U.S. Attorney's office says Hector Hernandez now faces ten years to life in prison. He admitted to opening border fences, alerting suspects to cameras and helping bring drugs across the border. As part of his guilty plea, he will be giving up more than a hundred thousand dollars he received in bribes over the last few years.

2004, calling it "classless, crass and deplorable," Federal Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell ordered an investigation into the racy Super Bowl 38 halftime show featuring pop stars Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.
