Florida Wants Supreme Court To Uphold Social Media Law

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida is trying to get the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a state law that places restrictions on social media platforms. The legislation would prevent large tech companies from banning political candidates and require the platforms to create a list of content standards. The high court previously blocked portions of the measure from taking effect while several big tech organizations, like NetChoice, continue to challenge the constitutionality of it. The state sent out a briefing late last week on why the ruling should be overturned. Justices are set to hear arguments in the case next month.

Charges Dropped Against Homeless Man Arrested In Orlando

(Orlando, FL) -- A homeless man won't have to face charges after his controversial arrest. Paul Clark was arrested two weeks ago after the city commission passed a law making it illegal to block a sidewalk. Critics worried the law would lead police to harass the homeless. Originally, the OPD said Clark was arrested for violating that law, but they later said he was arrested for breaking another law that was already on the books. The city prosecutor recently dropped the charge, but no reason was given. City Commissioner Bakari Burns says the new law is confusing. He tells News 6 we could have more wording that would put more protections for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

(Tampa, FL) -- The pirates are back to reclaim Tampa as their own. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla's elite Plunder-Team Ten Special Operations Unit will invade the city today and make their way to City Hall. There, they'll invite Mayor Jane Castor to meet with Captain Truett Gardner to negotiate the city's peaceful surrender. The rest of Gasparilla's crew is expected to make landfall Saturday ahead of the 2024 Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest. The invasion and docking will take place at 1:00, and the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates will start at 2:00. You can get more info at Tampa.gov.

Miami-Dade County May Terminate Miami Seaquarium's Lease

(Miami, FL) -- PETA is encouraged that what it calls an animal prison will finally close. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava wrote a letter this week to The Dolphin Company. They run the Miami Seaquarium, and Levine Cava writes she may terminate their lease. She says she has deep-seated concerns regarding the quality of care provided to the animals at the Seaquarium. PETA said yesterday it has champagne on ice and is preparing to celebrate the day the animals are finally freed from the dilapidated concrete tanks where so many lived and died in misery.

Jewelry Store Robberies Allegedly Connected To Influencer

(San Diego, CA) -- San Diego Police are searching for a woman in connection to a string of jewelry robberies. She appeared to employees to be a stylish influencer. The most recent robbery happened in late December at Daniel's Jewelers. Police report that a woman walked into the jewelry store, requesting to see some gold necklaces. She was reportedly dressed to the nines: from her makeup to a stylish hot pink jacket, to diamond necklaces, bracelets, and rings. During the interaction, she mentioned she was an "influencer." Detectives say she ran away with 36-thousand dollars in necklaces.

Ancient Zombie Viruses Could Be Unleashed

(Undated) -- Concerned scientists are focusing on ancient "zombie viruses" that could be unleashed. They fear the viruses, which are trapped in Arctic ice, could be unleashed due to global warming and fear once they are unfrozen could possibly start a deadly new pandemic. Scientists, from a university in southern France, say the frozen microbes could remain viable for tens-of-thousands-of-years.
