AZ Lawmaker Wants Pluto To Be State Planet

(Phoenix, AZ) -- A state lawmaker is making an effort to turn Pluto into Arizona's official state planet. Republican Representative Justin Wilmeth has been advocating for the proposed bill on social media, citing his reasons why it's a worthy idea. While no longer being a planet, Pluto was discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff back in 1930 and was one for nearly eight decades. Wilmeth argues such a move would help recognize the rich history of astronomy in Arizona and get people talking about the topic. Pluto has not been considered an official planet since 2006.

Today in History

2006, NASA launched the first ever Pluto space probe. The 700-million-dollar New Horizons mission began its almost ten-year journey to the planet Pluto becoming the fastest object ever to leave the Earth.

1937, Howard Hughes set a record by flying from Los Angeles to New York in seven-and-a-half hours.
