Florida Legislative Session To Begin
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida lawmakers will reconvene in Tallahassee this morning to kick off the new legislative session. Officials will discuss a variety of issues, including bills designed to lower the minimum age to buy rifles, lowering criminal penalties for people in possession of cannabis products, and regulating artificial intelligence. Another measure is expected to address the state's insurance crisis by preventing companies from putting a coverage limit on homes. Today is the deadline for legislators to file bills. The session is expected to run through early March.
Bad Weather Expected Today
(Melbourne, FL)-- Strong storms could hit Central Florida today. The National Weather Service is warning about strong to severe thunderstorms that could produce a few tornadoes. A Wind Advisory is in effect for Brevard, Lake, Seminole, Orange, Osceola and Volusia counties from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The NWS warns that gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
Baby's Body Found Inside South Florida Dumpster
(Hollywood, FL) -- South Florida police are looking for a suspect after a baby was found dead inside a dumpster. Authorities say a construction worker made the discovery while at a Hollywood building near South Federal Highway and Rodman Street earlier yesterday. Homicide detectives are asking nearby residents or business owners who have security cameras to send their footage to the city police department. The same plea is going out to Tesla drivers since their vehicles have 24/7 surveillance. Police have not released the child's identity.
Pasco County Juvenile Detention Center Deputy Arrested On Child Porn Charges
(Brooksville, FL)-- A corrections officer who works with underage inmates in Pasco County is facing child porn charges. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office announced yesterday that William Wilkinson was arrested last week at his home in Weeki Wachee. The 34-year-old works at the Pasco County Juvenile Detention Center. Investigators say they got a cyber tip on Wilkinson from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Man Shot To Death Outside Hard Rock Stadium After Dolphins Game
(Miami Gardens, FL)-- A man is dead after a shooting outside Hard Rock Stadium. Miami Gardens Police say it happened Sunday night on Northwest 27th Ave after the Dolphins-Bills game. He died at the scene. Investigators believe he and a group of friends got into an argument with the shooter. He has not been identified, but a source tells Local 10 News he was from Canada. No arrest has been announced.
Orlando City Council Passes Disorderly Conduct Ordinance
(Orlando, FL) -- A controversial new law is now on the books in Orlando. The city commission yesterday approved an ordinance that makes it illegal to intentionally block a sidewalk. The goal is to address disorderly conduct, but critics are worried it could lead police to harass the homeless. The city attorney, though, says it's designed to address problems that occur when downtown bars close. The law went into effect immediately.
Naked Man Arrested After Diving Into Pond At Bass Pro Shop In Leeds
(St. Clair County, AL)-- Sheriff's officials in St. Clair County, Alabama are holding a man in jail after he allegedly crashed his vehicle into a pole outside the Bass Pro Shop in Leeds and then stripped naked and jumped into a pond inside the store.The suspect, identified as George Owens, was taken into custody and charged with public lewdness, disorderly conduct, second degree assault, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment.
CA Official Wants Change In Tax Structure After Dodgers/Ohtani Deal
(Sacramento, CA)-- California State Controller Malia Cohen is speaking out regarding the L-A Dodgers 700-million-dollar deal with pitcher Shohei Ohtani. [[ SHOW-hey oh-TAH-nee ]]. The bulk of Ohtani's pay will be deferred at least ten years to a time when he will likely no longer be subject to California's tax laws. He could return to Japan and escape payment of California income taxes. Cohen said the current tax system allows for these kinds of deferrals primarily to the wealthy and it creates an imbalance. She is asking Congress to take action to correct the imbalance and move toward a more-fair distribution of taxes.
