NASA Gives Update Ahead Of Next Week's Moon Launch

(Cape Canaveral, FL) -- All systems are a go as the United Launch Alliance prepares for its upcoming moon launch off Florida's Space Coast. NASA officials held a news conference earlier today to discuss ULA's inaugural lunar mission of its Vulcan Centaur rocket planned for next week. The launch was originally set for Christmas Eve, but a hydrogen leak caused setbacks. The exercise is designed to help NASA with its research as the agency hopes to pet people back on the moon before 2030. Liftoff is scheduled on Monday, January 8th from the Cape Canaveral Space Station.

Bill Named After Police Officer Referred To Committee

(DeLand, FL) --The Volusia County sheriff supports what he calls a common sense bill. SB 1092 is known as the Officer Jason Raynor Act. It was referred to committee yesterday ahead of next week's legislative session in Tallahassee. The bill is named for a Daytona Beach Police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2021. The shooter was charged with murder, but he argued self-defense and was convicted on a lesser charge of manslaughter. The bill calls for more severe punishment for anyone who resists arrest even if they think the officer is acting illegally. Sheriff Mike Chitwood tells Spectrum News 13 the bill sends a strong message to law enforcement and law-abiding citizens that we're not going to tolerate this.

Civil Rights Attorney Faces Hearing Over Online Comments About Judicial System

(Orlando, FL) --Online comments could come back to haunt an Orange County lawyer. Civil rights attorney Jerry Girley has a hearing on Monday for comments he made after a judge overturned a verdict that was in his favor. Girley, who's Black, represented a Black doctor who sued AdventHealth for discrimination and won. After the judge overturned the verdict, though, Girley wrote that litigating civil rights for Black people is like climbing up a 100-foot cliff with a 100-pound boulder on your back. The judge filed a complaint with the Florida Bar. Jerry tells WESH 2 News he's concerned he could be suspended from practicing law based on statements that were made in good faith and that he honestly believes.

Public defender Gordon Weekes tells CBS News Miami it's clear there's a level of supervision that's lacking within the jail.
