Broward County Students Walk Out Over Principal's Reassignment
(Coconut Creek, FL) -- Dozens of Broward County students are protesting as an investigation into whether a transgender student athlete was allowed to compete. A walkout was planned at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, the day after its principal and several other staffers were reassigned. The case appears to involve a student who transitioned to female years ago and now plays on the girl's varsity volleyball team. A Florida law prohibits someone biologically born male to join a female sports team. Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata says the district will need to look into its procedures going forward.
Deadly House Fire In Volusia County
(Daytona Beach, FL)-- A man is dead after a fire in Volusia County. It happened yesterday in Daytona Beach on Hillcrest Drive. Firefighters say they found him and a pet dog dead inside the home. He has not been identified. Firefighters say it was an electrical fire caused by a Christmas tree having too many cords plugged into one central area.
Fifteen Hurt In Marion County Crash
(Ocala, FL) -- Over a dozen people are hurt after a crash involving an ambulance in Marion County Fire Rescue says the crash yesterday morning also involved a pickup truck and a small bus at Southwest 90th Street and Southwest 80th Ave. Witnesses reported the ambulance was hit and rolled over on its side while responding to a medical call. Fifteen people were taken to the hospital. They include 11 special needs students, two firefighters, the bus driver and the driver of the pickup truck. Fire Rescue says eight of the students were transported as a precaution, and the other three had minor injuries. The two injured firefighters also had minor injuries. FHP is investigating.
Passenger Dies On Royal Caribbean Ship
(Orlando, FL) -- A passenger on a cruise ship out of Brevard County is dead after suffering an onboard injury. Royal Caribbean said yesterday the passenger was on the Allure of the Seas, which is based in Port Canaveral. The cruise line didn't release any details, but TMZ.com reports the 16-year-old passenger died Saturday after falling from the balcony onto a deck. There's no word on where the teen is from or what caused the fall.
Polk County Teacher Arrested For Inappropriate Relationship With Student
(Haines City, FL)-- A Polk County teacher is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. Haines City Police yesterday arrested Kevin Rodriquez-Febus at Haines City High School.The 23-year-old is a math teacher there. Police say they got a tip about the relationship, and the student confessed that the two started dating this year after Febus approached her through an online messaging app. Police say Febus also confessed to the relationship, and he told investigators he loved the victim and considered her his girlfriend. Police say he also admitted to several acts of inappropriate behavior with the victim. Febus is charged with a second-degree felony, offenses against students by authority figures. The Polk County schools superintendent says he's moving forward with ending the teacher's employment.
Man Hurt After Attack Outside Tampa Nightclub
(Tampa, FL) -- A man is hurt after he was punched by two people who appear to be members of a performer's entourage in Tampa. It happened Monday morning outside Club Skye on East 8th Ave in Ybor City. Tampa Police say the man was punched twice in the head after he approached a performer to get a photo as the performer was leaving the venue. TMZ.com identifies the performer as Jacksonville rapper Nardo Wick, and it says the victim is 20-years-old. The man who was hit was knocked unconscious and fell to the ground. He's in critical but stable condition. TMZ posted video of the incident, and Tampa Police ask anyone who can identify the suspects to contact them. TMZ reports the victim had a severe concussion, and there are some spots where he's hemorrhaging. It's not clear if there will be any long-term damage.
The rapper who saw a fan get attacked outside a Tampa nightclub is expressing regret for the incident. A fan approached Jacksonville rapper Nardo Wick for a photo after a show in Ybor City this week, and two men with Wick knocked him out cold. Wick wrote on Instagram that he doesn't condone what happened, and he expressed to the victim and the victim's mother how sorry and concerned he is. Private Insurers Take Over More Citizens Policies
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Private insurers are taking over more Florida insurance policies for the second month in a row. Seven carriers absorbed more than 90-thousand policies from the state's Citizens Property Insurance last week. It is part of an effort to reduce the number of homes covered by Citizens, which is supposed to be used as a last resort. As of last Friday, the company had more than one-point-two-million policies, marking the lowest number since April.
Woman Arrested After Leaving Bag Of Meth At Convenience Store And Coming Back To Look For It
(Lincoln, NE ) -- A woman is under arrest and charged with possession of almost 400 grams of methamphetamine in Lincoln, Nebraska. Police say they were called to a convenience store after a woman, later identified as Merry Bills, left behind a bag of 33 grams of meth. Police took the bag, but got another call when Bills came back an hour later to look for it. Officers say they saw her in a car that matched witness descriptions, pulled the driver over, and found 390 grams of meth on Bills' person and in the car. She is being held on 150-thousand dollars bond in the Lancaster County jail.
