Florida Lawmakers Approve Hurricane Idalia Relief Funding

(Tallahassee, FL) -- More help is on the way for rural Florida communities who were impacted by Hurricane Idalia. The state Senate gave final approval to a more than four-hundred-million-dollar measure that would provide additional hurricane aid and address a backlog of residents who are trying to get home-improvement grants. The bill would also offer tax breaks for the agricultural industry, which has suffered in the months following the Category 3 storm. The legislation will head to the governor's desk for his signature.

Volusia County Council And School Board Debate School Security Funding

(DeLand, FL) --There's a debate over who should pay for extra school security in Volusia County. The school board, this week, asked the county council to help fund the hiring of seven more deputies, but the council refused. The district already has seven deputies, and the district and the council split the costs. A district spokeswoman says they just wanted to use that same arrangement for the additional deputies. Council Chair Jeff Brower, though, said yesterday it's the school board's obligation to plan and fund school security and not seek a bail out from the county. He also tells News 6 the district has enough money to easily cover the costs of this vital service, and trying to divert their responsibility to another agency is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Ramirez To Return To MPD

(Miami, FL) --Miami-Dade's former police director is returning to the force but in a new role. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced yesterday that Freddy Ramirez will be Senior Advisor for Policing and Transition. He'll start in January after he's medically cleared. The 52-year-old is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound he suffered this summer. Part of his job will be to help the department transition to working with an elected sheriff. Levine Cava also announced that interim director Stephanie Daniels will become the permanent director. She'll be the first woman and first Black woman to lead the MDPD.

The Navy, Not UFOs

(San Diego, CA) --The U.S. Navy says a cluster of lights over San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday was from a Navy parachute team and not UFOs. The Navy Parachute team is called the Leap Frogs and was part of the activity at the Stadium for the National Women's Soccer League semifinal game between the San Diego Wave Football Club and Seattle's OL Reign. The Navy did warn the public before the jump, but multiple calls to police were still fielded.
