Juror Could Face Charges After Mistrial Is Declared In Murder Case
(Orlando, FL)-- A juror could face charges after a mistrial was declared in an Orlando murder case. Bessman Okafor was on trial again this month for killing a 19-year-old in 2012. The 38-year-old was sentenced to death eight years ago, but the Florida Supreme Court ordered a new trial because the sentence wasn't unanimous. Since then, though, state law changed to allow the death penalty if just 8 of 12 jurors agree. The judge in the latest case declared a mistrial yesterday after a juror confessed that she discussed the case with a friend. Channel 9 reports the juror is expected to be charged with indirect criminal contempt.
Wakulla County Property Appraiser Discusses Multimillion Dollar Mistake
(Crawfordville, FL)-- Wakulla County is dealing with a multimillion dollar mistake. Someone in the county appraiser's office made a mistake last year when a land parcel's value was estimated at over 300 million dollars. In reality, the land was only worth 75-hundred dollars. County Property Appraiser Ed Brimner said yesterday it was an honest mistake, but it led the county and the school district to budget for four million dollars in tax revenue they didn't get. Brimner plans to meet with county officials tomorrow and Monday to discuss how to adjust the budget. He tells WCTV the employee responsible won't be fired, and changes are coming to prevent this from happening again.
