Florida Files Lawsuit Against Meta
(Tallahassee, FL) -- The state of Florida is going after social media giant Meta. Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming it knowingly designed harmful features on Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms to addict children. She went on to accuse Meta of falsely assuring the public that the apps were safe. The state believes these practices are continuing to negatively impact the mental health of young users. The federal complaint is hoping to collect an undetermined amount of money for the damages caused by the platforms. Dozens of states have filed similar lawsuits against Meta.
Shooting Suspect Surrenders
(St. Petersburg, FL)-- A man wanted for a shooting in St. Petersburg is out on bond after turning himself in. Police announced yesterday that Deronke Rashad Barron turned himself in for a shooting downtown over two weeks ago. Seven people were hurt. The 20-year-old is facing charges that include discharging a firearm in public, and more charges are pending. He was released after posting 11-thousand dollars bond.
Trans Woman Killed In Miami-Dade Shooting
(Miami, FL)-- A woman is dead after a shooting in Miami-Dade County, and her aunt believes someone close to the victim may have answers. Nedra Allen says London Price was the victim in Monday's shooting on Northwest 93rd Street. Police identified the victim as a man, but Allen says Price was a 26-year-old trans woman. No arrest has been announced, and there's no word on a motive, but Allen thinks Price's ex-boyfriend should be questioned. She tells Local 10 News Price was living with her ex, and the two had a troubled past.
Man Shot By Deputy In Marion County
(Ocala, FL)-- A man is hurt after he was shot by a deputy in Marion County. It happened last night after a deputy pulled over a dirt bike rider at Southeast Maricamp Road and Emerald Road. The sheriff's office says the driver took off on foot toward a field where a youth sports practice was being held. The deputy chased after him, and at one point, the man apparently reached for a gun he was openly carrying on his hip. The deputy shot him, and the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The deputy is on paid administrative leave, and the FDLE is investigating.
California Man Sentenced For Cyberstalking Parkland Father
(Miami, FL)-- A California man will spend a year in federal prison for cyberstalking the father of a Parkland school shooting victim. A judge sentenced James Catalano of Fresno after he sent hundreds of disparaging messages to Fred Guttenberg, an anti-gun violence activist whose daughter Jaime was killed in the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting. According to prosecutors, the messages graphically described Guttenberg's daughter's death and focused on the debate surrounding gun control. Guttenberg says because of this case, there is additional precedent to prosecute online harassment.
Escambia County Woman Accused Of Trying To Kill Man She Met Online
(Pensacola, FL)-- An ordeal an Escambia County man went through could serve as a warning about online dating. The sheriff's office says he was almost killed over two weeks ago by a woman he met online. Pensacola's Natalie Fonseca and Nafis Reynolds were arrested Monday for charges that include attempted homicide. Deputies say the 25-year-old Fonseca went out with a man she met on Facebook, and the 31-year-old Reynolds posed as her uncle even though he was really her boyfriend.The two allegedly took the victim to a cookout, and on the way back, they beat the victim, took his money, his phone, his shoes and his car, which they later set on fire. Deputies say Fonseca and Reynolds then cut the man's throat and threw him off a bridge into the Escambia River. He was able to swim to a riverbank before collapsing.Deputies say a boater found him the next day and took him to shore. The man walked until he found a deputy, and he was taken to the hospital where he was treated for several days. He was able to lead investigators to Fonseca's home, and the couple was arrested.
