Florida Lawmakers Agree To Move Forward With Iran Sanctions
(Tallahassee, FL) --Florida lawmakers are vowing to increase state sanctions against Iran. A bipartisan event was held by state legislators yesterday to show their support for Israel following the deadly attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas earlier this month. They also vowed to move forward with a request made by Governor Ron DeSantis last week to further block Iranian businesses in the Sunshine State. The DeSantis administration is expected to file legislation directed at sanctions and that would expand the ban on state investment in Iranian companies. The next legislative session is scheduled to begin in early January.
Two Men Tied To Polk County Mass Shooting Plead Guilty
(Lakeland, FL) --Two men are taking some of the responsibility for a Polk County mass shooting earlier this year. 31-year-old Nicholas Hanson and 23-year-old Marcus Mobley pleaded guilty to having guns and ammunition as convicted felons. Federal prosecutors say the men were connected to the drive-by shooting in Lakeland that injured nearly a dozen people back in late January. The men could each face up to 15 years in prison. Authorities believe there were at least five people in the car at the time of the incident. So far, no one has been charged with pulling the trigger.
Orlando To Buy Pulse Site
(Orlando, FL) --The city of Orlando wants to buy the site of the Pulse nightclub. Mayor Buddy Dyer announced yesterday the city plans to buy the land to build a permanent memorial to those who were killed in the mass shooting seven years ago. Dyer says the decision was made after he met with some of the victims' family members. He says the hurt and pain they shared only solidified our belief that the 49 angels deserve a permanent memorial. Dyer promises to take a thoughtful, collaborative approach to creating a memorial that honors the victims and pays tribute to the city's resiliency. The city council will discuss the two-million-dollar land purchase on Monday.
Pulse Nightclub Owner Reacts To City's Planned Purchase Of Site
(Orlando, FL) --There's mixed reaction to the city of Orlando's plan to buy the Pulse nightclub property. Barbara Poma was the club's co-owner, and she says she's grateful to the mayor and the city commission for making this a reality. Deborah Bowie is executive director of the OnePulse Foundation, and she says she's thankful the city will ensure the memorial will be located at the nightclub site.Some survivors, though, are skeptical.Joshua Hernandez wonders why it took seven years, and Marissa Delgado is angry the owners will profit from the sale after doing nothing for the last seven years. Others tell Channel 9 they hope the city investigates if the club's design violated code and led to victims being trapped inside.
More People From Israel Fly Into Tampa
(Tampa, FL) --A Tampa rescue group is responsible for helping get more people out of Israel. Project Dynamo worked with the Florida Division of Emergency Management to fly 40 people from Egypt to Tampa yesterday. Project Dynamo says the state paid for the plane. A family from California was onboard. They were in Israel on vacation when the war broke out.One family member tells 10 Tampa Bay they were scared for their lives, and they were so anxious to go home, they slept fully clothed and with their shoes on so they could be ready to board a plane at a moment's notice.
Miami Beach Commission Votes To Send Firefighters To Israel
(Miami Beach, FL) --Help from Miami-Dade County is on its way to Israel. The Miami Beach City Commission voted yesterday to send firefighters there to help cover for Israeli firefighters serving in the war. At least a dozen have agreed to go. Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez tells CBS News Miami this gives him absolute pride.
Man Arrested For Indecent Exposure At Volusia County Walmart
(Port Orange, FL) --A man is accused of exposing himself at a Volusia County Walmart. Port Orange Police announced yesterday that Nathaniel Poole, the Fourth was arrested for Monday's incident. The 23-year-old allegedly exposed himself to a customer. News 6 reports he's charged with indecent exposure.
Brevard County Man Ordered To Stop Building 'Man Cave'
(Indialantic, FL) --A man cave is the subject of a debate in Brevard County. An Indialantic man is stacking shipping containers in his backyard on Diane Circle to build a man cave, but the county has ordered him to stop. One neighbor in the Seaside community says the man went through the proper channels and spent the last two years getting the necessary permits. Another neighbor, though, tells Fox 35 News a man cave belongs inside a house, and what the man's doing doesn't make sense. A county official says the homeowner is willing to find a workable solution, and a meeting is set for next week over what county documents call the Traska Man Cave.
