MICKnuggets

Each day Bill records a MICKnugget, a one-minute take on some issue that got his attention that morning. Below are the scripts for last week’s NUGGETS.

10.02.23- Words, Actions & Consequences

Actions have consequences. For politicians add their words to the mix.

There are repercussions for all of us in what we say and do. It’s magnified for the political class. It’s their reputations that keep them in their jobs or gets them ousted.

Matt Gaetz and Speaker Kevin McCarthy are playing that out right now.

Locally, so is Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Wayne’s political actions have drawn an opponent for the Primary Election. It’s the first primary for him since his initial run.

For those that want to play politics and use the power of their positions for political gain, it opens a new discussion.

Are their motives pure and for the good of the community, or is there something else in mind?

The Johnus Disgustus endorsement by Ivey begs that question. It makes no sense for Brevard voters or candidates. So far there is no good answer.

I’m pretty sure there is not one.

10.03.23- Ruining High School Sports

Florida is considering allowing high school athletes to be paid for Name, Image and Likeness just like they are with college players. 30 states and the District of Colombia already allow it.

Georgia was the latest to approve the idea this week.

I don’t like the idea. Sports at the high school level and below are youth sports. The kids are amateurs and few of them will go on to play at higher levels, much less the pros.

We lose something when being paid to play comes into the equation. The ideas of sacrifice for your team, playing for school pride or just the joy of competition change.

Our kids are forced to grow up far too quickly as it is. Leaving kids’ sports to learning the game, how to compete and the lessons of winning and losing should be enough.

The talented athletes will have their day. We should let them be kids as long as they can.

10.04.23- We Are Divided

The House removed Kevin McCarthy as Speaker yesterday. Republican representatives are divided.

We are divided.

I worry that we have lost the ability to work for the good of the American people.

Yes, this was a showing of conservative interests in congress. It was a power move, but is that all there is to it?

If so, it was a huge mistake.

Does Matt Gaetz have a plan beyond the removal of the Speaker? I suppose we’ll see as events unfold today and beyond.

If he doesn’t, and the Republicans can’t hold the speakership or have their primary selection in that seat, was the move self-defeating?

We’ve lost the ability to govern with the best interests of America at heart. Instead of serving, officials are self-serving.

Yes, we’re divided, and we’ll see if yesterday improves that at all.

10.05.23- The Inside Scoop

Representative Bill Posey joined us Thursday and gave us the low down on the ouster of Kevin McCarthy.

The insights were surprising to many.

·Kevin McCarthy is the most conservative Speaker in Bill Posey’s time in congress.

·The continuing resolution removed money for Ukraine, but Republicans defeated that measure.

·Eliminating the Director of Diversity and promoting Pride month would have been removed, but Republicans kept it.

Bill also said, as we wondered, there was no plan for what happens after McCarthy was removed.

It remains to be seen if Republicans can unify behind Jim Jordan or Steve Scalise as Speaker.

Diversity exists in the Republican House and this time, it killed conservative moves in the right direction.

Great job, Matt Gaetz.

10.06.23- Cops or Counselors?

Seminole County Schools need to make a decision. Do they want cops on campus or not?

After Parkland, Florida focused on police or armed security being on every school campus, and rightfully so. Even with students and staff slaughtered by a gunman, the education establishment is still anti-guns in school.

Now, it seems they are anti-cop.

An Oviedo officer was the SRO when a 4th grade student became violent and uncontrollable. The cop intervened and handcuffed the student.

The cop was being a cop and did what he should have done. Somehow school policy says students below 4th grade are not to be handcuffed. That’s crap; it should be the cop’s discretion.

If they don’t want cops being cops, pull the cops from the schools and call a counselor or dean…or maybe a social worker.

Cops should follow department policy, not the whims of uneducated educators.
