Florida Files Emergency Rule To Outlaw Dietary Supplement
(Tallahassee, FL)-- The state of Florida is trying to ban a dietary supplement that's blamed for five deaths nationwide. Attorney General Ashley Moody recently filed an emergency rule to outlaw the product which is sold under the names Pegasus, Tianaa or Zaza Red. Officials say it can mimic the effect of opioids and is highly addictive. The supplement is typically sold at gas stations, convenience stores and online.Moody says Florida's Poison Control Center has received an increase in calls related to the product. It's already banned in at least eight states, including Alabama and Georgia.
Florida's Minimum Wage To Increase Next Weekend
(Tallahassee, FL)-- The minimum wage in Florida will soon go up. The hourly rate for non-tipped workers will increase to 12-dollars at the end of the month. Tipped employees will also notice a raise to nearly nine-dollars an hour. It's part of an amendment approved by voters in 2020 that will increase the state's minimum wage by one-dollar every year until it reaches 15-dollars. After 2026, officials will adjust additional raises based on inflation.
Deadly Crash Involving Central Florida School Bus
(West Melbourne, FL)-- Central Florida police are investigating a deadly crash involving a school bus. Authorities say a motorcycle hit the side of a Brevard County Schools bus in West Melbourne yesterday morning. The biker died at the scene. More than 20 students were on their way to Central Middle School at the time of the incident. None of them were hurt and the bus driver was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Brevard School Board Votes To Settle Lawsuit Over Mask Policy
(Titusville, FL)-- A family's two-year legal battle with the Brevard County school district could be coming to an end.The school board voted this week to start settlement talks with an Indian Harbour Beach family that sued the district in 2021. The family was upset that their seven-year-old daughter, who has Down syndrome, was forced to wear a mask at Ocean Breeze Elementary School, and the mask was tied to her face so she couldn't remove it. One school board member who voted to start settlement talks says it makes financial sense. He tells Florida Today the money the district would spend fighting the suit is money that could be spent instead on extra laptops and playgrounds.
Man Thought To Be Impersonating A Police Officer Is Really A Cop
(Miami, FL)-- Miami-Dade Police are investigating the actions of one of their own.A woman named Yarny says a man dressed as a police officer and driving an unmarked SUV with flashing lights pulled over her husband this week, pointed a gun at him and threatened to shoot him.She says the man got back in the SUV and drove off when he realized she was filming him. She thought the man was just pretending to be a police officer, but the MDPD confirmed yesterday he's really an officer. They didn't identify him, but they say they're investigating.Meanwhile, Yarny tells NBC 6 this person is a dangerous threat to the community.
Nashville Police Asking For Volunteers To Live Stream Their Security Cameras
(Nashville, TN)-- Police in Nashville are looking for volunteers to share their security camera video. Metro Police are asking people to sign up to livestream the feed from any public-facing camera on their property. Right now Nashville police say just 50 of the 800 or so security cameras in their system are allowing police live access. Metro Police commanders say the idea is to be able to quickly comb crime scenes if something happens in the neighborhood. Some people aren't sure however, and advocates say there are surveillance risks to weigh.
