Florida Prison Use AI To Monitor Conversations

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida prisons are using artificial intelligence to listen in on inmates' phone conversations. The state's Department of Corrections started using the surveillance program last month after paying two-point-five-million dollars to California-based Leo Technologies.The system is able to transcribe up to 50-million minutes worth of phone calls coming in and out of the prison.The contract will run through June of next year. Officials say the technology can help prevent violent crimes, drug smuggling and suicides within the prison system.

DeLand Police Officer Fired For Comments

(DeLand, FL)-- A police officer in Volusia County is no longer on the force because of comments he made on the job. DeLand officials announced yesterday that Police Captain Frank Williams was fired for comments he made seven months ago at a crime scene. An internal affairs report shows Williams used racist, homophobic and misogynistic language. Williams had been with the police department for two years.   

St. Pete Residents Speak Out Against Rays Stadium Plans

(St. Petersburg, FL)-- Plans for a new baseball stadium aren't sitting well with some St. Petersburg residents. A group gathered yesterday at City Hall to protest plans for the stadium in the Historic Gas Plant District. The city says the plans include housing and equity programs. Protesters, though, say that's what they were promised when the current stadium was built decades ago, and they're worried the city will fall through on its promises once again. One protester tells News Channel 8 just because the city will benefit doesn't mean its working-class residents will.

New Program Gives LEOs Exposure To What Prosecutors Do

(Tampa, FL)-- A new program could lead to better understanding between law enforcement and prosecutors. The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office welcomes police officers and deputies to visit the courthouse and see how cases are handled. The program is called Bridging the Badge, and State Attorney Suzy Lopez says it creates transparency and communication. A Tampa Police officer who took part in the program yesterday says it lets him see how important his role is in the legal process.He tells ABC Action News from now on, he'll be more thorough and meticulous with his reports so attorneys have an easier job when a case goes to trial.

McDonald's Unveils New Pokemon Happy Meals

(Chicago, IL)-- McDonald's is revealing something for Pokemon fans. The fast food giant announced that it is rolling out new Match Battle toys in Happy Meals. The package includes a special-edition Pokemon coin, along with a sticker sheet and four trading cards.
