State Regulators Allow Private Insurers To Pull Citizens Policies
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida regulators are allowing a group of private insurers to take over tens of thousands of policies from the state's largest property insurance company.The state signed off on seven proposals late last week to allow the insurers to pull as many as two-hundred-thousand policies from Citizens. This means homeowners could have to pay more for coverage. The companies will be able to begin their new operations in late November. The move came days after Idalia made landfall on Florida's west coast.
Florida Tolls Reinstated Following Temporary Pause Due To Idalia
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida drivers will have to start paying for tolls again. Governor Ron DeSantis temporarily paused payments last week as residents prepared for Hurricane Idalia. Most major toll roads along the state's west coast have been toll-free since the beginning of last week, just days before the storm made landfall in the Big Bend area as a Category 3. Payments resumed yesterday afternoon, but an emergency order is still in effect to allow expanded weight and size requirements for trucks transporting relief and agriculture supplies.
State Politician Involved In Incident In Volusia County
(Daytona Beach, FL)-- An elected official is accused of getting physically aggressive with an employee at a Volusia County shelter. The alleged incident involving Port Orange State Senator Tom Wright took place at a domestic violence shelter in Daytona Beach this weekend. A woman who works there told police Wright aggressively put his hand on her shoulder when she asked him to stay away from a bus full of survivors and children. The woman says she was trying to protect their privacy. Wright told police he only put his hand on her shoulder to reassure her he would not get on the bus. Police have told Wright to stay away from the shelter.
Residents Protest Plans For Pickleball And Tennis Courts In Miami-Dade County
(Aventura, FL)-- Some Miami-Dade County residents aren't happy with what a city plans to do with a park. Aventura residents yesterday protested plans to add seven pickleball and tennis courts at Founders Park. The protesters are also upset that the city wants to replace the grass at the park with artificial turf. They say the pickleball sounds are too loud, and the artificial turf could be toxic.A city spokesperson, though, says artificial turf doesn't require the chemicals that natural grass does. He also tells Local 10 News these changes are in the best interests of the entire community, not a small group.
