Thousands Without Power In Big Bend

(Undated) -- Thousands are still in the dark in the Big Bend. Idalia made landfall as a Category Three hurricane yesterday morning in Taylor County near Keaton Beach. As of this morning, the county has over 13-thousand power outages. Suwannee County has almost double that while Madison and Jefferson counties have about 20-thousand combined outages. Statewide, there are over 140-thousand outages.

Idalia Floods St. Pete Neighborhood

(St. Petersburg, FL)-- Part of Pinellas County has a lengthy cleanup ahead. Shores Acres in St. Petersburg was flooded by Hurricane Idalia yesterday. The fire department had to use rescue boats to help residents evacuate. One woman who was rescued says the water had never risen this high before. The water was up to one man's hips as he walked to his parents' house to check on them, and a teenager was kayaking to check on a friend's house. One man tells the Tampa Bay Times the water was higher than it had been in fifty years. Flooding wasn't the only problem, though. A house on Bayou Grande Boulevard Northeast caught fire, and the fire department says it was a significant loss.

Dozens Rescued From Flooded Homes In Pasco County

(Hudson, FL)-- Hurricane Idalia's impact is evident in Pasco County. The sheriff's office says it rescued 60 people from flooded homes in the Hudson area yesterday. New Port Richey officials say over a hundred were evacuated there.Deputies reported flooded streets, downed trees and power lines. Residents with water in their homes are advised to safely disable the power if possible to avoid electrical issues and fire hazards. Also, drivers are warned that it takes just six inches of water to cause issues with cars.   

First Responders From Central Florida Helping In Storm Recovery

(Orlando, FL)-- First responders from Central Florida are helping those affected by Hurricane Idalia. Hundreds of emergency workers left the Orange County Convention Center yesterday to head to the Big Bend. About 40 of them are members of Urban Search and Rescue Task Force Four. They have been responding to disasters for almost 20 years. A spokesman tells the Orlando Sentinel they go where they're needed, and they're the best of the best.

DeSantis Issues Warning To Looters

(Perry, FL)-- Governor Ron DeSantis has a warning to looters. He said yesterday people have the right to defend their property, and if you loot, they will shoot. DeSantis adds that if you break into someone's house, you never know what's behind that door.

BSO Helicopter That Crashed Was Past Replacement Date

(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- The helicopter involved in a deadly crash in Broward County should have been replaced years ago. That's the finding of a report done six years ago by Law Enforcement Aviation Consultants.The chopper crashed this week into a home in Pompano Beach. Two people were killed. They were a BSO captain and a 65-year-old woman who lived in the home. The report called for the helicopter to be replaced in 2011, but repairs were made to extend its lifespan. Even after those repairs, the report found the helicopter should have been replaced no later than last year. Broward Mayor Lamar Fisher tells CBS News Miami he'll ask the county commission at next month's meeting to buy a new chopper.

Man Hurt In Bear Encounter In Seminole County

(Sanford, FL)-- A man is hurt after an encounter with a bear in Seminole County.Fire Rescue says he reported being attacked by the bear around quarter-past-ten last night in Alaqua Lakes on Winding Pine Trail. He says he was walking his dog when it happened, and he wound up falling and hitting his head.When he came to, his dog was gone.Fire Rescue believes his wounds were from the fall and not the bear. A witness told deputies the bear may have been spooked by the dog's barking. She also says the bear appeared to have a cub with her. The dog is still missing.

Brightline Start Pushed Back Two Weeks

(Orlando, FL)-- Brightline is dealing with another delay in its plan to run high-speed trains between Orlando and Palm Beach County. The service was supposed to start September 7th, but officials yesterday announced a two-week delay. The new start date is September 22nd. Brightline says the delay is due to testing and certification.

SpaceX Plans Launch

(Cape Canaveral, FL)-- SpaceX hopes to launch another rocket tonight. It has a launch planned for 7:52 p.m from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. A Falcon Nine rocket will carry 22 more Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.Launch conditions are only 20-percent Go, but the company has five backup launch opportunities until 11:29 p.m.Six more backup opportunities are available tomorrow. 

Two Chicago Firefighters Escape Man's Basement Spread With Gasoline

(Chicago, IL)-- Police say a man is in custody after he lured two Chicago firefighters into his South Side home, where the floor was covered with gasoline. Other firefighters smashed a window to reach the battalion chief and lieutenant. Two knives and a loaded gun were recovered. The suspect was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and no charges have been announced.
