Biden Approves Federal Disaster Assistance For Florida

(Washington, DC) -- Florida is getting additional help from the government as Tropical Storm Idalia [[ ee-DAL-ya ]] heads toward the state's gulf coast. President Joe Biden approved federal disaster assistance for the area yesterday. This will allow FEMA to organize and help fund relief efforts in affected communities.The agency has already started to deploy crews. There are 46 counties under a state of emergency.  Idalia is expected to become a hurricane later today and could make landfall near the Big Bend on Wednesday morning as a Category 3.

A Tropical Storm Warning was issued for Orange, Osceola, Lake, Marion, Polk and Seminole counties.A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Brevard and Volusia counties. The NWS expects Tropical Storm Idalia to become a major hurricane when it makes landfall tomorrow. 

Tolls Suspended In Central Florida

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Tolls are suspended in Central Florida as Idalia approaches. Governor Ron DeSantis announced yesterday tolls are being waived in Lake, Sumter and parts of Orange counties. He says waiving tolls eases the burden on families in the path of the storm. DeSantis also asks that anyone under an evacuation order make plans to go to a safe area, even if it's just a few miles away.

Two Killed In Broward Helicopter Crash

(Fort Lauderdale, FL)-- A member of the Broward County Sheriff's Office is being remembered as a rock star. That's what Sheriff Gregory Tony said yesterday about Fire Rescue Captain Terryson Jackson. The 50-year-old was one of two people killed in a helicopter crash yesterday morning in Pompano Beach. The sheriff's office says a Fire Rescue helicopter had an in-flight emergency and crashed into a small apartment building. Jackson and a woman inside the apartment died. Two others on the helicopter survived. Jackson had been with Fire Rescue for 19 years. Tony says Jackson was one of the best and one of the brightest. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.

Bike Thief Who Stopped to Pet Dog Arrested

(San Diego, CA) --A viral San Diego bike thief is under arrest thanks to an anonymous tip. Video shows a man walking up to an open garage and taking a 13-hundred-dollar e-bike. As he's leaving, a golden retriever walks up to say hello. The thief stops, walks the bike back into the garage and spends about a minute giving the dog kisses and belly rubs before he escapes with the bike. The police say the suspect is a 42-year-old male but have not released a name.

Nordstrom Closes Its San Francisco Store After 35 Years

(San Francisco, CA) -- Nordstrom is closing its San Francisco store after 35-years. The retailer said the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market changed dramatically over the past several years and it has impacted customer foot traffic to the store. The shopping mall operator Westfield said foot traffic has dropped from nine-point-seven million visits in 2019 to five-point-six million in 2022. Officials say more than 39 retail stores have closed in the city's Union Square area since 2020.
