Here’s a recap of the week…
BML Monday: Decisions Good & Bad
…social media driven?
Something became apparent during my time off.Decision making is critical, yet so many times it’s blundered by people who should know better. And then, instead of recognizing it, apologizing and moving on, they try to justify it or lay the blame somewhere else. Real leadership requires acknowledging mistakes and then acting to correct them to repair any damage. Why is this so difficult for folks? We’ll examine some examples as we begin our talk week.
Chicago has given up on crime. At least one of their officials has. Glenn Beck was deplatformed from Apple Podcasts and then reinstated…or was he? Target blames customers for its losses in sales, but wasn’t it the company’s bad decision making that led to the problem? And we have two Republican lawmakers who managed to find a way past a dispute after one made a horrible mistake.
On the presidential front, Vivek Ramaswamy is saying some very good things as the Republican debate draws near. He also says the second job, Vice President, is not for him. Donald Trump has ditched the debate in favor of a one-on-one interview with Tucker Carlson. It’s a good move for Trump, but what’s it mean for Vivek, DeSantis and the others?
Here on the Space Coast a high school football team’s future is in jeopardy as is that of its coach. The Viera Hawks season is in question after a locker-room hazing incident that generated social media outrage. Was it boys being boys or something more? Let’s hope BPS takes the time to investigate. Social media does not make for good fact finding or a making up a quality jury from the outrage mob.
BML Tuesday: Let Them Eat Cake (but not a Hurricane Cake)
We’ll spend the first hour of our day at the grocery store. Publix made a couple of policy announcements that have our attention. One doesn’t make a lot of sense, but the other is a welcome admonition.
Brevard School officials met with players, parents and staff at Viera High School last night over the football hazing incident from last week. I appreciate that an investigation is under way to determine just what occurred, but am concerned that there is already talk of turning results over to the State Attorney’s Office.
Education policies impact how our kids understand the world. We’ve come across one that appears to be detrimental and will under serve the students.
Given time, we’ll look at the Brevard Cultural Alliance and whether the county should continue using tax dollars to prop up these organizations that have become dependent on those funds.
In our final hour Dave Bowman returns to look at political debates. They are not what they once were, as DAVE DOES HISTORY will show us.
BML: WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY
…it’s a big list
If you can think of it, it’s in play on today’s BML.From local high school football to the return of stupid COVID ideas anything is up for grabs on today’s show. We’ve got Target blaming you for its bad decisions, a horrible idea in education, tonight’s Republican candidate debate, a good idea on Brevard tax dollar use and more.
It’s WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY so where we go is up to you. What do you like for the day?
BML Thursday: A 3rd Party Chance?
…maybe
The Republican presidential debate happened, but did anything actually happen? President Trump wasn’t there, but was featured in a Tucker Carlson interview that aired opposite the debate on X. Did you watch? Did you care?As the candidates chipped away at each other, it did raise one question for me. Is this the year a third party run could impact the election? There are rumbles out there and there is something attractive about the idea.
IN A HANDBASKET will focus on what you’ve done to Target! It’s all your fault, after all.
Monday we discussed a really bad idea in Chicago as the Windy City starts to beg its criminal element to limit its violent activities to overnight hours. Today we’ll look at Seattle that will start doing its best to kill social workers.Until these cities get a handle on properly handling crime, their problems will only continue to mount.
BML Friday: Ethics and Hubris
…Brevard Politics are Dirty
Orlando has been unsuccessfully combating downtown violence with restrictions on businesses and law abiding citizens. It’s not working as shootings in the City Criminal continue to blight the tourist town. Now they have suspended their first after-midnight liquor permit. What the city asks of these establishments is far beyond reasonable. Does Melbourne really want to do this to its downtown businesses?
Brevard politics are simply nasty. We have, for far too long, been electing some people who simply are not worthy of the trust placed in them. Ustaville has given us just the latest example and the hubris that goes along with it.
Ethics seem to be lacking among this class of politician. Anything goes if it’s personal power or wealth on the line. The idea of actually serving the community has been, for some, lost long ago.
The Space Coast arts community is aghast over a recent county commission decision to stop funding the Brevard Cultural Alliance.Brevard’s tourism development tax has been funding the group for years and it’s created a dependent class that now feels entitled. Now they’re entitled to figure out where next year’s budget will originate.
We’ll begin our day IN A HANDBASKET with the gender and sports question having two opposite reactions. In one, there is common sense. In the other, well, you just can’t talk about it.
