(Titusville, FL)-- Hazing accusations could lead to criminal charges in Brevard County.Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced yesterday his office is investigating the allegations at Viera High School. Video of the alleged incidents involving the football team were posted to social media last week. Ivey promises a complete and thorough investigation, and the results will be sent to the state attorney's office for review. Meanwhile, all football activities at the school are suspended, and the head coach has been fired. Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell met with parents last night, and he tells News 6 the season won't resume until proper conditions are met.
Manatee County Student Found With Gun
(Bradenton, FL)-- A Manatee County student is accused of bringing a gun to school. The sheriff's office says a Southeast High School student was arrested yesterday. An SRO found the gun while searching the student's fanny pack for a vape device. The 16-year-old boy is charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
Hialeah Police Officer On Trial For Beating Homeless Man
(Hialeah, FL)-- A former Hialeah Police officer is on trial for allegedly beating a homeless man. Opening statements were made yesterday in Rafael Otano's trial. The 27-year-old is charged with kidnapping and battery. He was arrested seven months ago and was then fired. Another officer was arrested for the same alleged incident.
Publix Reinforces No Pet Policy Inside Stores
(Lakeland, FL) -- Publix is reminding shoppers about its no pet policy in Florida. The Lakeland-based grocery chain has placed new signs at the entrance of its stores, asking for non-service animals to be removed from the property. The signage also mentions that it's illegal for people to misrepresent their pet.Service animals are allowed in the supermarket, but officials are asking customers to keep them out of shopping carts or baskets. The posters were put up to help enforce the existing policy.
Pediatric Group Calls For Ban On Corporal Punishment In Schools
(Itasca, IL)-- The American Academy of Pediatrics is calling for a ban on corporal punishment in all schools. Striking or spanking children is legal in public schools in 18 states, mostly in the South. New Jersey, Maryland and Iowa are the only states that prohibit corporal punishment in both public and private schools. A separate study of Canadian children, published last week in JAMA Network Open, shows that kids who were physically assaulted before age 14 are nearly twice as likely to develop mental illness.
National Cinema Day This Sunday
(Undated) -- More than three-thousand movie theaters across the country will offer discounted tickets this Sunday. In honor of National Cinema Day, all movies in all formats will cost less than four-dollars. That even includes "Oppenheimer" in Imax if showtimes aren't already sold out.This marks the second-annual National Cinema Day, hosted by the Cinema Foundation. Last year's event was the most-attended day at the movies in 2022.
