MICKnuggets

Each day Bill records a MICKnugget, a one-minute take on some issue that got his attention that morning. Below are the scripts for last week’s NUGGETS.

08.14.23- Back to Ustaville

Ustaville (aka: West Melbourne) has always had trainwreck politics.

It appears nothing has changed.

Mayor Hal Rose bought a house in Viera in May. His West Melbourne home sold last week.

Rose originally signaled his intention to resign the mayorship and move on.

No, wait, the mayor’s now leasing a room from a friend in Ustaville and wants to keep the mayor’s job.

Some on council are bucking the idea and it’s coming up in Tuesday’s council meeting.

We’ve seen this move in nearly every level of office in Florida. It’s never really mattered as residency requirements are loosely written. Council will decide the issue, and then maybe the courts.

This is the best thing to happen in Ustaville since a councilwoman returned an old TV in a new TV box to Target or maybe when a councilman who had moved to Tennessee kept the seat and forced out an honorable police chief.

You can always count on Ustaville for political entertainment.

08.15.23- Indictment Fatigue

I don’t know about you, but I am experiencing Indictment Fatigue.

President Trump has been indicted again. This time it’s in Georgia, with a litany of charges and a group of coconspirators, for what prosecutors are calling an attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

The Trump camp has responded as one would expect, but it’s not the Trump response that matters in the long run.

No, it’s how the voters respond that will make all the difference in the world.

Will this bolster the Trump campaign’s efforts and launch him into another term in the White House, or will it bring him down and put other Republican candidates in play?

While the Democrats are using 2020 to attack Republicans in general, we can’t keep rehashing the 2020 election.

Republicans need to get energetic behind their candidate, whomever it is, and go win an election.

Otherwise, this nonsense will never stop.

08.16.23- Ramaswamy Gets Free Speech

There is at least one presidential candidate who gets free speech and dialogue- Vivek Ramaswamy.

In a recent viral video the candidate was asked by a “pansexual” activist about his views on the LGBT community.

Ramaswamy was stellar in his answer saying that he did not believe it was actually one community. He pointed out tensions between trans and gay segments of that population and then, in something unusual for a candidate, asked the activist’s opinion.

The two, who had very differing viewpoints, then discussed the topic. How novel is that?

A contentious issue, opposite views and people actually talking about it instead of throwing heated bullet points at each other.

Vivek Ramaswamy may or may not have any shot at the presidential nomination, but he certainly gets communication and its use in resolving issues.

We could use a lot more of that in politics at all levels.
