FHP Launches Week-Long Speeding Crackdown
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida drivers can expect to see more police on the roadways this week.Law enforcement agencies across five southeastern states, including the Florida Highway Patrol, launched Operation Southern Slow Down yesterday. It's a week-long effort to crackdown on speeding and aggressive driving along interstates. FHP says speeding contributed to more than ten-percent of deadly crashes in Florida last year. The initiative is also taking place in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee through Saturday.
State Education Officials To Discuss New Rule Proposals
(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida education officials are expected to take up a series of potential rule changes later this week. The State Board of Education will consider new proposals directed at school districts.The measures include prohibiting TikTok on school campuses and expanding a rule that would block instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity through eighth grade. Some of the proposals come from bills that became law earlier this year. Officials are scheduled to meet in Orlando tomorrow.
Three Brevard County Residents Convicted For Capitol Riot
(Washington, DC)-- Three Brevard County residents are awaiting sentencing for their roles in the Capitol riots. James and Casey Cusick and David Lesperance were convicted last week in a federal court in Washington, D.C. The three were arrested six months after the riot in 2021. The Cusicks lead the Global Outreach Church in Melbourne, and Lesperance is a worshiper there. They'll be sentenced in October on charges that include violent entry and disorderly conduct in a restricted building.
Man Bitten By Shark In Volusia County
(New Smyrna Beach, FL)-- A Palm Beach County man is recovering from a shark bite in Volusia County.Beach Safety Ocean Rescue says the 48-year-old was bitten on his back Saturday. He was sitting in the water off New Smyrna Beach near the south jetty.He suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. There's no word on how big the shark was. This was the third shark bite this year in Volusia County.
CT Woman Crash Lands Plane In MA After Pilot Suffers Medical Emergency
(West Tisbury, MA)-- A Connecticut woman is being called a hero for crash landing a plane on Martha's Vineyard after the pilot suffered a medical emergency. We don't know much about the passenger, just that she's 68-years-old. It's unclear whether she had any prior flying experience but she took over the single-engine plane's controls Saturday afternoon after the 79-year-old pilot suffered a medical emergency enroute from Westchester County Airport to Martha's Vineyard. The woman landed the Piper Meridian on its belly at Martha's Vineyard Airport. The pilot survived.
