Drug Traffickers Accused Of Lacing Fentanyl With Animal Tranquilizer

(Orlando, FL)-- A recent drug bust highlights an emerging threat to public safety.That's what Orange County Sheriff John Mina said yesterday after 14 people were arrested as part of Operation Moscow Mule. The suspects were allegedly lacing fentanyl with an animal tranquilizer called Xylazine [[ZY-luh-zeen]]. Mina says what makes Xylazine so dangerous is that it's resistant to the anti-overdose drug, Narcan. He says Xylazine is responsible for three deaths in the county this year compared to just two all of last year. A lead investigator says Xylazine is not a fad, and it's here to stay. 

Brevard County Sheriff's Office Sued For False Arrest

(Merritt Island, FL)-- A Brevard County man believes deputies racially-profiled him. Real estate investor Letrevis Nathan recently sued the sheriff's office for false arrest. He and his brother were arrested last year for allegedly stealing from a construction site in Merritt Island, but the charges were dropped. Nathan and his brother are black, and Nathan tells News 6 that may have been a factor in their arrests.   

Leon County To Use AI Gun Detection Tech

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Artificial intelligence could keep schools safer in Leon County. The school board yesterday approved a 30-thousand dollar contract with a company called Zero Eyes. The company uses AI in security cameras to detect guns and alert school and law enforcement officials. The technology will be implemented at five high schools in August.Superintendent Rocky Hanna tells WCTV this is cutting-edge technology that will hopefully give parents more comfort.

Pinellas County School District To Sue Social Media Companies

(Largo, FL)-- The Pinellas County School District may sue social media companies.The school board held a workshop yesterday to discuss joining other school districts across the country who are suing Meta, TikTok and others. The districts are worried social media is harming students and distracting from their school work. School Board Chair Lisa Cane says social media leads to bullying and is a constant negative source of conversation for students and teachers. 

Janitor Turns Off Freezer And Ruins 20 Years Of School Research

(Troy, NY) -- A janitor ruined 20 years of research by turning off a lab freezer at a private research university in New York. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute filed a lawsuit against the janitor's contractor Daigle Cleaning Systems Inc and is seeking one million dollars in damages. Officials say in September of 2020, the janitor heard annoying alarms and turned the freezer off in an attempt to be helpful. The next day students found the freezer full of cell cultures and samples compromised and destroyed. The private university does not believe the janitor is at fault but blames his contractor for failing to train and supervise him.

College World Series Sets Jello Shot Record

(Omaha, NE)-- LSU didn't just win the College World Series baseball title, it also won the Jello shot challenge. Fans who bought five-dollar Jello shots from Rocco's Pizza and Cantina could designate which school hometown food shelves would get a one-dollar donation. Last year, the total number of Jello shots sold was just over 32-thousand. This year, Jello shots for LSU alone were over 68-thousand. The total Jello shots for all teams was over 95-thousand.  A dollar from each is going to food shelves in team hometowns.
