DeSantis Signs Bills Aimed At Strengthening Punishments For Certain Crimes

(Titusville, FL) --The state of Florida is cracking down on drug and child abuse related crimes. Governor Ron DeSantis was in Brevard County earlier today to sign three bills into law. One of the measures strengthens punishments for those who sell or manufacture fentanyl if it is packaged to look like food or candy. Another would increase the minimum penalty for all child rapists to a life sentence without the possibility of parole. It also improved reforms to reinstate capital punishments. Those two laws will officially take effect in October.

Florida Killer Asks U.S. Supreme Court To Halt This Week's Execution

(Tallahassee, FL) -- A man on Florida's death row is asking the U.S. Supreme Court for help ahead of his execution this week. The attorneys of 56-year-old Darryl Barwick requested to halt the process and urged justices to consider problems with the state's clemency process. The filing came a day after a federal district judge denied a similar request last week. Barwick was 19-years-old when he stabbed 24-year-old Rebecca Wendt to death in Bay County back in 1986. If he's executed on Wednesday, he would be the third inmate put to death by lethal injection in less than three months.

CFTOD Suing Disney

(Orlando, FL) --Disney is being sued by its own government. The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District voted yesterday to sue Disney in state court. CFOTD Board Chairman Martin Garcia says they have no choice since Disney sued them and the state last week in federal court. He adds Disney is trying to wrestle back the hands of time to 1967, while this board is charged with bringing the district into the 21st century with new and better policies and practices.

Brevard Zoo To Release Sea Turtle Back Into Ocean

(Melbourne, FL) --A sea turtle will be back in familiar waters today. A sea turtle named Banana will be released into the ocean this morning. The Brevard Zoo's Sea Turtle Healing Center has been taking care of Banana for over a year after it was rescued from the Indian River Lagoon. Several tumors and an eye were removed from Banana's body. Despite having just one eye, zoo officials tell Channel 9 Banana can still live a long, normal life. The release is set for 10:30 a.m. in Satellite Beach at Hightower Beach Park on Highway A-One-A. The public is invited, and you're asked to wear yellow in honor of Banana.

Researchers Find Underwater Hospital, Cemetery In Dry Tortugas

(Dry Tortugas, FL) --Researchers are taking a deeper dive into a more than one-hundred-year-old discovery off the South Florida coast. The National Park Service explained Monday how officials found a former quarantine hospital and a cemetery in the waters of Dry Tortugas National Park. The graves were part of the Fort Jefferson Post Cemetery, most of which were military members. Officials say the healthcare facility was reportedly used to treat yellow fever patients at the fort as far back as the 1890s.Archaeologists started to survey the area last year and plan to share more details about their findings soon.
