DeSantis Signs Bill To Change Death Penalty Requirement

(Tallahassee, FL) -- There are changes to Florida's death penalty policy. Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill yesterday removing a requirement for a unanimous jury recommendation before judges can move forward with death sentences. The measure was introduced after convicted killer Nikolas Cruz was sentenced to life in prison last year in the 2018 shooting deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The new legislation will take effect immediately.

NWS Warns Floridians Not To Turn Off EMS Alerts

(Miami, FL) -- The National Weather Service is strongly recommending Floridians keep their emergency alerts turned on. The government agency says if people disable the notifications they will not receive updates on severe weather, which could mean the difference between life and death. The State Division of Emergency Management has apologized for the early morning text alert that woke many residents up around 4:45 a.m. Officials say they are working swiftly to remove the party responsible.

Florida Fires Contractor Blamed For Accidental Test Alert

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida officials say they've ended the contract with a firm that handles emergency alert messages. This after a test meant for TV and radio stations got sent to millions of cell phones early Thursday morning. Officials say they're investigating what is being called an "unfortunate procedural error" that caused the messages to go out. Officials say that could cause them to miss tornado warnings and other public safety messages.

(Tampa, FL)-- Tampa Police are looking for a man who allegedly attacked a DoorDash delivery driver. Police yesterday released a composite sketch of the suspect in Tuesday's incident at the Residence Inn on West Boy Scout Boulevard. Investigators say the woman in her early 20s was at the hotel for a delivery when the armed man forced her into her car, forced her to drive to the Belara Lakes Apartments on North Waterford Ave and sexually battered her. The woman had her phone open so her family could track her, and they responded to the scene. Police say they confronted the man, and he shot at them and escaped. No serious injuries were reported. The sketch of the suspect is available at Tampa.gov.
