DeSantis To Deliver State Of The State Address

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Governor Ron DeSantis will outline his priorities for 2023 today. He'll deliver his State of the State Address after the legislature opens its 2023 session. Nova Southeastern University political analyst Charles Zelden expects DeSantis to appeal to voters beyond Florida. He tells CityAndStateFL.com DeSantis will make a case for why and how Florida can become a model for the rest of the country. DeSantis will make his first trip to Iowa on Friday.   

State Ban On Gender-Affirming Care For Minors To Take Effect Next Week

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Florida's ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors will take effect next week. Once it does, the state Board of Medicine will prevent doctors from prescribing puberty blockers or surgeries for new patients experiencing gender dysphoria who are younger than 18 years old. It would not impact people who are already being prescribed medication prior to Thursday of next week. Medical professionals who violate the rule could face fines or have their licenses revoked.

Four Arrested At USF Protest

(Tampa, FL) --Students and police have different versions of what happened during a protest at USF. Four people, including two students, were arrested yesterday during a protest on campus at the Patel Center for Global Solutions. Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society were demanding a meeting with USF President Rhea Law to discuss her plan to protect diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs. At one point, things got physical, but police and the protesters disagree on who escalated the situation. A USF Police spokesman says the protesters became aggressive and initiated physical altercations with police. Protesters, though, tell the Tampa Bay Times police were 'super' aggressive, sat on students, pushed them to the ground, and kicked one student in the head. Another student group is planning to protest today.

Orange County Man Pleads Guilty To Fraud

(Orlando, FL) --An Orange County man won't fight charges that he defrauded the federal government of millions of dollars. The Justice Department announced yesterday that Windermere's Nikesh Patel pleaded guilty to fraud while on federal pretrial release. The 38-year-old's legal problems date back to 2014 when he was accused of a 180-million-dollar fraud scheme. Federal prosecutors say while trying to pay that money back, he came up with another scheme that victimized a Miami bank and the Federal Agriculture Mortgage Corporation, or Farmer Mac. He was arrested in 2018 at the Kissimmee airport before boarding a flight to Ecuador in an apparent attempt to flee the country. 

Brevard County Landlord Accused Of Stealing From Brain-Injured Tenant

(Palm Bay, FL) --A Brevard County landlord is accused of stealing from a vulnerable adult. Palm Bay's Mark Defino was arrested Friday for allegedly stealing 10-thousand dollars in Social Security checks from a tenant who has a traumatic brain injury. The sheriff's office says besides being the man's landlord, Defino was also his caregiver and beneficiary. That allowed him to withdraw 500 dollars a month for rent from the man's Social Security checks, but investigators tell News 6 the 65-year-old took much more. No trial date has been set.

Seminole County Firefighter Arrested For Vandalism

(Orlando, FL) --A Seminole County firefighter is facing criminal charges. Brian Baine was arrested for vandalism last month. The 27-year-old allegedly put anti-police stickers on businesses and a mural on the Orlando Urban Trail. Channel 9 reports he's also on unpaid leave from the fire department. Baine has been with the fire department for almost three years. 

Jackson County Teen Playing Baseball Despite Being Double-Amputee

(Cottondale, FL) --A disabled Jackson County teenager hopes he can inspire others. Cottondale High School sophomore Jacob Brown is playing on the JV baseball team despite being a double amputee. He was two when he had both legs amputated at the knee. While others might see his condition as a negative, Brown says it's great because it makes you more motivated to outdo others. That attitude seems to be translating to the field. Brown's coach says he plays harder than anybody. Brown tells News 13 he takes every day as a challenge, and if you put your mind to it, anything is possible.

Woman Gets Stuck In Chimney During Attempted Break-In

(Oklahoma City, OK) -- Chimneys are for fireplaces only. That's the message from police in Oklahoma's capital city over the weekend after a woman was caught trying to gain access to a home through the chimney. Police responded to the home in Oklahoma City to find the woman stuck in the small structure. Two people were home, but nobody was hurt. The woman was taken into custody for breaking and entering.
